From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the United States industrialized very quickly.
Workers were often treated mainly as a cost of production. Wage cuts, long working hours, and poor working conditions were common, and conflicts between workers and employers were often intense.
Historical studies show that many strikes in the 1870s and 1880s were directly about wage cuts and working conditions.
At this time, Christianity became an important force of moral correction.
After the 1880s, church pulpits, Christian publications, and church meetings paid more and more attention to the relationship between employers and workers.
By the early 20th century, the Social Gospel movement treated child labor, slums, unsafe workplaces, and extreme poverty as social problems that Christians should respond to.
So we can ask:
When Christian faith is stronger in society, are employers more likely to be restrained by this idea: you should not only seek profit, but also treat workers well?
The answer is: this kind of moral restraint did exist, but it had two different levels.
The first level is that personal faith could truly change the way a person ran a business.
Some Christian business owners voluntarily provided housing, medical care, pensions, recreation, and other forms of care for workers.
Some business owners even tried to direct more of the benefits of the business toward their employees.
The “welfare capitalism” that appeared in the early 20th century included pensions, workplace safety, health programs, and employee benefits.
The second level was more complicated.
Some employers used Christian language and employee benefits not only out of kindness, but also to reduce union activity, increase worker loyalty, and improve productivity.
During the religious revival in the United States after World War II, some companies even hired ministers to care for workers inside factories.
Research shows that there were both sincere religious motives and business management goals behind these practices.
So a more accurate historical conclusion is:
When biblical moral values are stronger in society, people are more likely to openly recognize that employers not only have the right to make money, but also have a duty to treat workers with fairness, honesty, and mercy.
From a biblical point of view, employers cannot treat workers only as a “cost.”
For example, James 5:4 says:
“The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you.”
Deuteronomy 24:14–15 teaches that people must not take advantage of poor and needy workers, and that workers should be paid on time.
Colossians 4:1 says:
“Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.”
So the real Christian restraint on capitalism is not opposition to profit. It is this:
Profit is not the highest authority. Employers are also under the judgment of God.
This is very important.
If an employer says:
“If you do not want this job, someone else will take it right away. So I can lower wages and refuse to pay overtime.”
From a purely market point of view, the employer may say, “This is simply supply and demand.”
But from a Christian ethical point of view, that is not enough.
The Bible asks deeper questions:
Are you taking advantage of another person’s weakness?
Are you withholding the wages that person deserves?
Do you see that person as someone made in the image of God, rather than as a replaceable tool of production?
This is why the spiritual condition of a society can affect its economic life.
There is another very interesting pattern in American history.
When industrial capitalism was at its harshest, many people who pushed for labor reform were themselves Christians.
They were not trying to destroy business.
They believed that Christian faith must place moral limits on the power of capital.
Social Gospel
The Social Gospel later developed many theological problems connected with liberal theology.
But its early concern about child labor, poverty, workplace safety, and wages did come from a real Christian moral concern.
We can go one step further and state the historical point more clearly:
If true spiritual revival reaches economic life, it should not only increase church attendance. It should also change how employers pay wages, arrange working hours, and treat vulnerable workers.
Otherwise, it may become:
“Religious on Sunday, but still exploiting people on Monday.”
This is the kind of religious hypocrisy that the prophets and the Book of James repeatedly condemn.
From a Christian view of human nature, wealth does not automatically make a person worse, but it can magnify what is already in the heart.
If a person treats money as security and as an idol, the more wealth he has, the more strongly he may try to protect it.
This may produce the pattern people often describe:
“The richer he becomes, the more stingy and calculating he becomes.”
But if a person truly sees himself as a steward of what God has entrusted to him, then greater wealth may instead lead to greater generosity.
Because the final Christian question is not only:
“How much money did I make?”
而是:
But also:
“God entrusted these people, this wealth, and these opportunities to me. Have I used them faithfully?”
