17:8–16 / Sunday Scripture Preview: The Battle with the Amalekites | Exodus 17:8–16
Exodus 17:8–16 | The Battle with the Amalekites
The other Scripture readings clearly cited in this week's bulletin are Psalm 25:1–8, Deuteronomy 6:4–9, Romans 5:6–9, and Romans 11:33–36.
Call to Worship|Psalm 25:1–8
LORD, I lift up my heart to you.
My God, I trust in you. Do not let me be put to shame.
No one who waits for you will be put to shame.
LORD, show me your ways. Teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me, because you are the God who saves me.
LORD, remember your mercy and faithful love, for they have always been with you.
Do not remember the sins of my youth or my rebellion. LORD, remember me according to your faithful love and goodness.
The LORD is good and upright. Therefore, he teaches sinners the right way.
Reformed Point
The psalmist admits that he is a sinner, but asks God to remember him according to God's own love and mercy.
The foundation of salvation is in God, not in man.
Reading of the Law|Deuteronomy 6:4–9
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
These words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Teach them carefully to your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.
Bind them as a sign on your hand and keep them before your eyes.
Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Faith in the Family
God did not give the spiritual teaching of children only to the church.
He first tells parents in the covenant community: “Teach them carefully to your children.”
Assurance of Pardon|Romans 5:6–9
While we were still weak, Christ died for sinners at the right time.
Very few people would die for a righteous person. Perhaps someone might dare to die for a good person.
But God shows his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since we have now been justified by his blood, we will be saved from God's wrath through him.
The basis of justification is not our works, but the blood of Christ.
Main Sermon Passage
Exodus 17:8–16|The Battle with the Amalekites
17:8
Then the Amalekites came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.
Experiencing God's grace once does not mean there will be no more battles.
17:9
Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men for us and go out to fight the Amalekites.”
“Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”
People do their duty below.
At the same time, they depend on God above.
Reformed theology does not teach that God's sovereignty means we do nothing.
17:10
Joshua did what Moses told him and fought against the Amalekites.
Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
The Bible keeps both truths together:
God is completely sovereign.
People must faithfully do their duty.
17:11
Whenever Moses held up his hands, Israel was winning. Whenever he lowered his hands, Amalek was winning.
Moses' hands had no magic power. The power came from God.
The raised hands show: Dependence on God.
17:12
But Moses' hands became tired.
They brought a stone and put it under Moses, and he sat on it.
Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other.
His hands remained steady until sunset.
God often does not make one person do his work alone.
This is the church.
17:13
Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.
God was the one who truly gave the victory.
This is a good example of the Reformed understanding of secondary causes.
God used Joshua, the army, Moses, Aaron, Hur, and even a stone for Moses to sit on.
But finally: The glory belongs to God.
17:14
The LORD said to Moses, “Write this in a book as a memorial and make sure Joshua hears it: I will completely remove the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
People easily forget God's grace, so God commanded that his works be recorded.
Our faith should be built on the Word God has revealed and caused to be written.
17:15
Moses built an altar and called it “The LORD Is My Banner.”
The LORD is my banner.
A banner shows whom we belong to and whom we fight for.
17:16
He said, “The LORD will be at war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
God not only saves his people. God also judges evil.
Reformed View: Whose Battle Is This?
表面上:Israel vs. Amalek。
On the surface: Israel vs. Amalek.
At a deeper level, God is protecting his covenant people.
God was carrying forward his plan of redemption.
Finally, Christ would come through this covenant people.
Does Moses Point to Christ?
We should be careful here.
We should not simply say: “Moses raising his hands = Jesus raising his hands in heaven.”
Scripture does not directly say this.
But in the whole history of redemption, Moses' role as mediator does point us forward.
Moses is not the final Mediator.
The true and perfect Mediator is Christ.
Christ Is Greater Than Moses
Moses' hands became weak.
But Christ lives forever.
Christ always lives to intercede for those who belong to him.
Our final hope is not whether we can keep our faith strong all the time, but that Christ remains our Mediator.
The Christian's Battle Today
The New Testament does not command the church to build an army and attack unbelievers.
The Christian's main spiritual battle today includes:
罪。
Sin.
试探。
Temptation.
不信。
Unbelief.
The schemes of the devil.
Therefore Christians need:
God's Word.
Prayer.
信心。
Faith.
教会。
The church.
Supporting one another.
One Story Across Three Weeks
Exodus 16
No food → God gives manna → Christ is the Bread of Life.
Exodus 17:1–7
No water → God gives water from the rock → Christ is the struck Rock.
Exodus 17:8–16
There is an enemy → God gives victory.
The God who provides for them does not change.
Catechism Service|Romans 11:33–36
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how difficult his ways are to trace!
Who has known the mind of the Lord? Who has been his counselor?
Who has first given to God so that God must repay him?
For all things are from him, through him, and to him.
To him be glory forever. Amen.
Soli Deo Gloria
What to Listen for Tomorrow
Why does Amalek's attack come right after the water from the rock?
What do Moses' raised hands mean—prayer, God's authority, or more generally dependence on God?
How does Joshua's real fighting relate to God's sovereign gift of victory?
What does Aaron and Hur supporting Moses teach about supporting one another in the church?
Will the preacher connect Moses' role as mediator to the greater Mediator, Christ?
One-Sentence Preview
Israel had to truly fight, but their victory did not finally depend on their own strength. It depended on the LORD. God used Joshua, Moses, Aaron, and Hur as his instruments, and led his people to confess: “The LORD is my banner.”
