17:1–7 / Sunday Scripture Preview: Living Water from the Rock | Exodus 17:1–7
Exodus 17:1–7 | “Living Water from the Rock”
The other main Scripture readings this week are Psalm 105:1–6, Exodus 20:1–17, 1 Corinthians 6:11, and Romans 11:33–36.
Psalm 105:1–6
Call to Worship|
Give thanks to the LORD and call on his name. Tell the nations what he has done.
Sing to him and praise him. Tell about all his wonderful works.
Glory in his holy name. Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD be glad.
Seek the LORD and his strength. Always seek his presence.
You descendants of Abraham his servant, children of Jacob whom he chose, remember the wonderful things he has done.
Reformed Point
It especially speaks about “those whom he chose.”
Israel was first God's chosen people, and then they were called to obey him.
Human obedience does not produce God's election.
God's grace produces our gratitude and obedience.
Exodus 20:1–17
Reading of the Law|
These are the Ten Commandments.
You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make idols or worship them.
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
You shall not desire what belongs to your neighbor.
An Important Order
Notice the order in Exodus:
God first rescued Israel from Egypt, and then he gave them his law.
不是:
It is not:
Keep the law → be saved.
而是:
It is:
Saved by grace → learn to obey.
1 Corinthians 6:11
Assurance of Pardon|
Some of you were once like this. But you were washed, you were made holy, and you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
There are three important words:
Washed
Sanctified
称义——Justified
The Christian hope is not:
“I was not very bad before.”
而是:
It is:
“I am a sinner, but Christ has washed me.”
Main Sermon Passage
Exodus 17:1–7|Living Water from the Rock
17:1
The whole congregation of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
注意:
Notice this:
They came to a place without water, not because they had left God's way.
The text clearly says:
“As the LORD commanded.”
This is very important for understanding suffering.
Sometimes we are obeying God and still enter a wilderness.
Difficulty itself does not prove that God has left us.
17:2
So the people argued with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink!”
Moses said, “Why do you argue with me? Why do you test the LORD?”
Their real problem was not only thirst.
Their problem was unbelief.
17:3
The people were very thirsty there, and they complained against Moses.
They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to make us, our children, and our animals die of thirst?”
This is very similar to the previous chapter.
Exodus 16:
No food → complaining.
Exodus 17:
No water → complaining.
God had just provided manna.
But the human heart quickly forgets grace.
17:4 — How Did Moses Respond?
Moses cried to the LORD, “What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
The people:
Complained.
Moses:
Prayed.
This is a simple but important contrast.
When trouble comes, we usually have two directions:
Complain to people.
或者:
Or:
Cry out to God.
Exodus 17:5
The LORD said to Moses, “Take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.”
The text especially mentions the staff.
This is not a small detail.
Moses had used this staff to strike the Nile.
The water became blood.
That was God's judgment on Egypt.
Now this staff connected with judgment appears again.
The Key Verse: Exodus 17:6
“I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb.”
This sentence is very unusual.
Normally, a person stands before God to be judged.
But here God says:
“I will stand before you.”
Then God says:
“Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.”
Moses did this before the elders of Israel.
The Heart of the Reformed Understanding
Who sinned?
The people.
Who deserved judgment?
The people.
But where did the staff strike?
The rock.
And God said:
“I will stand there on the rock.”
This gives us a powerful picture of redemption:
The guilty people were not struck.
The rock was struck.
然后:
Then:
Life-giving water came out.
Who Is the Rock?
The New Testament directly helps us understand this passage.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:
“That Rock was Christ.”
So this is not only a miracle story about getting water.
It points to Jesus Christ.
The people sinned,
but Christ bears judgment.
Christ is struck,
and sinners receive life.
This is the gospel.
How Does This Connect to the Cross?
Isaiah 53 says:
“He was wounded for our transgressions. He was crushed for our sins.”
We should receive God's judgment.
But Christ took our place.
Reformed theology calls this:
Penal Substitutionary Atonement
Penal = 刑罚。
Penal = punishment.
Substitution = 代替。
Substitution = taking another person's place.
Atonement = 赎罪。
Atonement = dealing with sin and reconciling us to God.
Simply:
Christ stood in the sinner's place and received the judgment the sinner deserved.
What Does the Water Point To?
After the rock was struck,
water flowed out.
In the Bible, water is often connected with life and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus says in John 7:
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.”
John then explains:
Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit.
This gives us a beautiful gospel pattern:
The Rock is struck.
↓
Water flows out.
↓
Dying, thirsty people receive life.
同样:
In the same way:
Christ is crucified.
↓
The Holy Spirit is given to his people.
↓
Sinners receive eternal life.
The Human Problem Is More Than Lack of Water
Exodus 17:7
Moses called the place Massah and Meribah.
Because the Israelites argued and tested the LORD, saying:
“Is the LORD among us or not?”
This is the real problem of the passage.
They did not simply wonder whether God existed.
Their question was:
“Is God really with us?”
But think about this:
The pillar of cloud was before them.
God gave them manna every day.
God had just brought them through the Red Sea.
But when trouble came, they asked:
“Where is God?”
This is also our sin.
God's Providence and Our Daily Life
Sometimes we think:
“If God loves me, why am I facing this difficulty?”
But Exodus 17:1 already gives an answer:
They came to the place without water according to God's command.
所以:
Therefore:
Difficulty does not mean God is absent.
Sometimes difficulty is the way God trains our faith.
Reformed theology calls this:
God's Providence|
God does not only control the final result.
He also rules over the road we travel.
Connection With Last Week's Exodus 16
上周:
Last week:
No food.
God gave:
Manna.
本周:
This week:
No water.
God gave:
Water from the rock.
Both finally point to Christ.
Manna:
Christ is the Bread of Life.
The rock:
Christ is the struck Rock who gives living water.
These two weeks form a very clear Christ-centered message:
Hungry people need Christ.
Thirsty people need Christ.
What sinners truly need is Christ.
Romans 11:33–36
Catechism Service:
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! His judgments are beyond our understanding, and his ways are beyond our tracing out.
Who has known the mind of the Lord? Who has been his counselor?
Who has first given to God, so that God must repay him?
For all things are from him, through him, and to him.
To him be glory forever. Amen!
This is a deeply Reformed passage.
All of salvation is:
From God.
Through God.
To God.
Therefore, the final message is not:
“I saved myself.”
而是:
It is:
Soli Deo Gloria
What to Listen for Tomorrow
Tomorrow, when listening to “Living Water from the Rock,” pay special attention to these five questions:
Why did God lead Israel to a place with no water?
What does it mean to “test the LORD”?
Why does the text mention the staff that struck the Nile?
Does “I will stand there on the rock” point to judgment and substitution?
How will the preacher connect the rock to Christ?
One-Sentence Preview
Rebellious Israel deserved judgment, but God caused the rock to be struck and gave life-giving water from it. This finally points to Christ: he receives judgment in the sinner's place, so thirsty sinners may receive life through him.
