In fact, Islam is a political ideology mixed with religious ideas. Strong political demands, together with conditional approval of violence, can lead to terrorism. Compared with the Bible, the Quran uses very direct language and is, in the author’s view, more like a book of law and a political program.
After reading the Quran, the Hadith, and the book of Islamic law called the Weigaye, the author believes they are basically political programs and law books. Nazism divided friend and enemy by race and used violence. Leninism divided friend and enemy by class and used violence. Islam, the author says, divides friend and enemy by faith and uses violence. So the author sees Islam as political because it can use violence to remove other religions and carry out Sharia law. Faith, however, is something inside the heart. Even if violence has limits, the devotion and fanaticism of Muslims can, again and again, be used by interest groups that create false conditions, producing mobs and terrorists.
The goal, according to the author, is to create an Islamic social order throughout the whole world, changing every “land of war” (in Islamic terms, areas that follow Islam are called the “land of Islam,” while areas that do not follow Islam are called the “land of war”) into the “land of Islam,” so that everyone in the world will finally become Muslim. The author says this is not simply for self-defense. (Quran 9:33; 48:28)
*The following are full verses quoted from the Quran. Those who defend it should not say these are taken out of context.*
I. Quoted Passages from the Quran
9:123. O you who believe! Fight the unbelievers who are near you, and let them feel your severity. Know that Allah is with those who control themselves.
8:65. O Prophet! Encourage the believers to fight bravely. If there are twenty patient people among you, they can defeat two hundred enemies. If there are one hundred among you, they can defeat one thousand unbelievers, because the unbelievers are people who do not understand.
9:29. Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, who do not follow what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not follow the true religion, even among the People of the Book, until they pay the jizya according to their ability and submit properly.
5:33. The punishment of those who fight against Allah and His Messenger and spread disorder in the land is only that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides, or be driven out of the land. This is their disgrace in this world, and in the next world they will have a great punishment.
66:9. O Prophet, struggle against the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their final home is Hell, and it is a terrible destination.
8:17. You did not kill them; rather, Allah killed them. When you shot, it was not really you who shot, but Allah who shot. (He did this) so that He might give the believers a good gift from Himself. Allah is indeed All-Hearing and All-Knowing. 【Used to remove the feeling of guilt for killing】
8:12. At that time, your Lord revealed to the angels: “I am with you, so make the believers firm. I will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers.” So strike their necks and cut off their fingers.
4:74. Let those who sell the life of this world for the life of the next world fight in the way of the Lord. Whoever fights in the way of the Lord and is killed, or kills the enemy and succeeds, I will give him a great reward.
9:111. Allah has truly bought the lives and property of the believers in exchange for Paradise. They fight for Allah; they kill the enemy or are killed. This is a true promise, written in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. Who is more faithful to a promise than Allah? So rejoice in the agreement you have made. That is the great success.
8:60. Prepare against them all the military power and war horses that you are able to prepare. By them you may frighten the enemies of Allah, your enemies, and other enemies besides them whom you do not know but Allah knows. Whatever you spend in the way of the Lord will be fully repaid to you, and you will not lose anything.
9:3. (This is) an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to all people on the day of the great pilgrimage: Allah and His Messenger are free from responsibility toward those who associate partners with Allah. If you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape Allah's punishment. Give the unbelievers the “good news” of a painful punishment.
47:4. When you meet unbelievers on the battlefield, strike and kill them. After you defeat them, take them as prisoners. Later, either release them or allow them to pay a ransom, until the war lays down its burden. That is how it is. If Allah wished, He could punish them Himself, but He commands you to fight so that He may test you through one another. (The author adds: this is why fighting continues in the Islamic world.) As for those who die in the way of the Lord, Allah will never waste their good deeds.
The property and children of unbelievers cannot help them at all against Allah's punishment. These people are fuel for Hell. — Chapter 3, verse 10
33:26. He brought down from their strongholds those People of the Book who helped them (the author explains this as other Abrahamic believers), and He put terror into their hearts. You killed some and took some as prisoners.
33:27. He caused you to inherit their land, houses, property, and land you had not yet entered. Allah has power over all things. (Muslims have the right to take the property of non-Muslims, according to the author.)
Chapter 59, verses 2–5, describes how Christians and Jews were killed and conquered, according to the author.
- At the time of the first exile, He drove from their homes those who believed in the Bible but did not believe in the Quran. You did not think they would leave, and they thought their strongholds could protect them from Allah. But Allah's punishment came to them from a place they did not expect. He put terror into their hearts. They destroyed their own houses with their own hands and with the hands of the believers. O people with understanding, take warning.
- If Allah had not decided that they should be exiled, He would certainly have punished them in this world. In the next world they will suffer punishment by fire.
- This is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. Whoever opposes Allah will certainly be punished by Him, because Allah's punishment is severe.
- Whether you cut down date-palm trees or leave them standing, it is permitted by Allah. He allowed the trees to be cut down in order to disgrace the disobedient.
At the same time, the context of Quran 61:10–12 is described by the author as war: Allah's love for warriors fighting in organized ranks (the subject of the chapter), and His criticism of hypocrites who do not want to fight. The author therefore says that Islam is warlike by nature.
In a scripture of more than 200,000 Chinese characters, the author says there are 486 references to “punishment,” 215 to “Hell,” 106 to “cut” and “kill,” 55 to “severe,” 35 to “hatred” or “hostility,” 23 to “terror,” 116 to “fear,” 28 to “blazing fire,” 25 to “blood,” 95 to “obedience,” and 98 to “disaster” or “calamity.” The author says there is only one reference to “tolerance.”
Non-Muslims and Muslims can also live together peacefully, but the author says it is unrealistic to imagine permanent peace.
Please read Quran 3:118: “O believers! Do not sincerely associate with people of a different religion. They will spare no effort to harm you. They hope that you will suffer. Hatred has already come from their mouths, and what their hearts hide is even more evil.”
II. Passages from Sahih al-Bukhari
Now let us look at Sahih al-Bukhari. Sahih al-Bukhari is regarded by Sunni Islam as the most authoritative collection of hadith. Apart from the Quran, the author says there is no Islamic scripture considered more reliable than Bukhari.
Muhammad said that he was commanded to fight people until they said that only God (Allah) is worthy of worship. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:196)
Muhammad was commanded to fight mankind until they recited the Islamic declaration of faith. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1:25, 392, 393; 4:52:196)
Muhammad and Umar ordered Muslims to invade the lands of unbelievers and fight them until they worshiped only Allah or paid the jizya tax. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:53:386)
The best Muslims are described here as those who put chains around people's necks until they accept Islam. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6:60:80)
After the conquest of Mecca comes jihad. When a Muslim ruler calls you to jihad, you should respond immediately. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:79, 311)
One day Muslims will launch jihad. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:56:792)
Muhammad allowed attacks on polytheist fighters at night, even though this might put their women and children in danger. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:256)
Muhammad attacked the Banu Qurayza, killed the warriors (who, according to the author, had already surrendered), captured their women and children, and distributed their women, children, and property among Muslims. He expelled all Jews from Medina. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:280; 5:59:362, 443, 444, 447, 448)
Since Islam is political, the author says it also makes compromises. This is presented as the religious basis for peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims.
III. Political Compromise, Taqiyya, and Apostasy
The Islamic children's introductory reading and daily standard, the chapter on military campaigns in the Weigaye book of Islamic law, teaches how to conquer unbelievers, how to use deception and disguise for self-protection, and how to fight unbelievers after becoming stronger. Shia Islam also has a similar principle of taqiyya. The author says Muslim children are therefore taught ideas about killing. As for hiding one's position before unbelievers:
A person may be forced to declare unbelief while remaining firm in faith inside the heart. (Quran 16:106)
Believers must not leave fellow believers and take people of another religion as allies. Whoever breaks this rule will not receive Allah's protection, unless you fear them and only pretend to deal with them. Allah warns you to beware of Him. Allah is the final destination. (Quran 3:28)
Looking across history, the author claims that when the Muslim population in an isolated non-Islamic area reaches more than 30 percent, war against unbelievers will certainly begin. The Bosnian War and the Hui rebellions in Shaanxi and Gansu are given as examples.
Perhaps expecting Islam to be called a religion of peace is, in the author's words, even less realistic than hoping Satan will return to heaven. (The author says he is not religious and is only using a comparison.) Of course, most Muslims today do not live by violence, because, the author says, the Quran is like a set of choices. If you want peace, you can find peaceful verses. If you want war, you can find fighting verses. You can find verses that allow only defensive jihad, and you can also find verses that are used to justify offensive jihad. For example, a verse often quoted in the statement “Islam is peace” is said to mean: “If you kill one person, it is as if you killed all people.” But the author quotes Quran 5:32 as saying: “If you kill one person — unless that person committed murder or caused disorder in the land — it is as if you killed all people.” The next verse, the author says, gives a series of severe punishments for people who fight Muslims and “cause disorder,” including killing, crucifixion, or dismemberment. But this can also be used as
a reason for jihad. For example, the author asks what would happen if Muslims one day defined “causing disorder” as “secularism, democracy, and non-Islamic values.” (The author then refers to the July 7, 2005 London bombings and says that on July 8 a Muslim weekly in London published
Abid Ullah Jan published a long editorial titled “Islam, Faith and Power.” Its general idea, according to the author, was that Muslims should work to gain more political and military power from non-Muslims, that war is a duty for all Muslims, and that Islamic states should be established throughout the world, with Islam followed and Islamic law carried out. After writing all this, the author says readers should understand that there is no division between “rational” and “irrational” Muslims, but only between those who are naturally more warlike and those who are less so. When needed, the author says, Muslims can be stirred up by religious teaching to carry out jihad. When it is not needed, Islam is again presented as a peaceful religion and Muslims as loving members of the world community. The author admits that condemning an entire people is generally rejected, but argues that if a religion teaches people to do evil, then the religion itself is evil. The author says his view is not extreme and that everything presented is factual. If Muslims read the article and respond with threats of violence, he asks them to go back to the Quran and Hadith and quote the original texts to prove that his materials are false or that he has insulted or slandered Muslims and Islam.
Some material is quoted from Yu Kun's blog post, “Recommended Reading List for Muslim University Students (Island).”
The author says Muslims have no right to appeal to freedom of religion, because the Quran and Hadith, in his view, teach not only punishment in the next life but also killing apostates in this life. People born into Muslim communities, he argues, therefore do not truly have the right to choose their own faith. Indoctrination is one method, and the threat of death is another.
Quran 4:89 says, according to the author, that Muslims may kill the “hypocrites” mentioned in verse 88 who “turn away from the right path,” while verse 90 gives some exceptions.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:260; 9:84:57, 58, and 64; and 9:89:271 record Muhammad as saying that apostates should be killed.
The chapter on apostasy in the Weigaye book of Islamic law describes in detail how Muslims who change their faith are to be punished in this life. The author says there are two stages: imprisonment and then execution.
Under Islamic law (Sharia), the author says the general agreement is that a male apostate must be executed unless he is mentally ill or his apostasy was not voluntary, such as when his life was in immediate danger. According to the Sunni Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, a female apostate must also be executed. According to the Sunni Hanafi school and some Shia scholars, a female apostate is to be imprisoned until she returns to Islam.
The author says this can explain more than 2,000 so-called honor killings around the world each year, in which women are allegedly killed by fathers or brothers for freely choosing romantic partners, marrying non-Muslims, or choosing another religion. The author mentions cases in Xinjiang and the United States, including news about an Afghan Muslim couple accused of killing three daughters because of the way they dressed. The author also mentions an 18-year-old Saudi girl named Fatima in 2008, saying that after she became a Christian her uncle cut out her tongue and burned her to death with gasoline. A British girl named Banaz is also mentioned as having been killed by her father and uncle because she was in a relationship with a non-Muslim man.
Shafilea, a 17-year-old girl living with her Pakistani parents in Warrington, Cheshire, England, is described as having wanted a Western lifestyle and freedom in relationships rather than Islamic restrictions. The author says her parents killed her, cut up her body, and left it in bushes.
Shafilea Ahmed: a girl betrayed
Shafilea Ahmed: a girl betrayed
Under Sharia law, the author says, there is no such thing as freedom of religion.
An apostate is described here as anyone who was originally Muslim, including people born to Muslim parents and people who converted to Islam from another religion, but later left Islam for another faith, as well as anyone who attacks Islam.
In places ruled by Islamic law, the author says there is no religious freedom and apostates are arrested, killed, or isolated. In this description of Muslim thought, the religious community is seen as one living body that does not allow a member to separate from it. Changing religion therefore means changing one's connection and loyalty to the group.
Teachings in the Quran concerning apostates
· Muslims are told to do the following:
o Do not take your own fathers or brothers as protectors if they leave Islam and choose unbelief. (Quran 9:23)
o Capture and kill hypocrites who turn away from the right path. (Quran 4:88, 89)
o Fight those who break their agreement after making a treaty and who insult Islam. (Quran 9:12)

· For people who first say they believe and testify that Muhammad is true, but then become unbelievers, the punishment is described as follows:
o They receive the rejection of God (Allah) and the joint curse of the angels and all mankind. (Quran 3:86, 87)
o God (Allah) will replace them with another people. (Quran 5:54)
o They will receive a great punishment. (Quran 16:106)
o Their repentance will never be accepted. (Quran 3:90)
o Their good deeds will become completely useless in this life and the next, and they will remain in Hell forever. (Quran 2:217)
Muhammad is described as teaching Muslims to treat apostates in the following way:
· If someone leaves Islam and changes his faith, kill him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:260; 9:83:17, 37; 9:84:57, 58, 64; 9:89:271)
· Wherever apostates are found, kill them, and the killers will receive a reward in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection. (Sahih al-Bukhari 9:84:64)
Caliph Abu Bakr treated apostasy as treason.
Later Islamic law formally set out the following rules:
· Muslims should use every means to persuade a male apostate to repent. If he does not return to his faith within three days, he is to be executed.
· A female apostate is to be imprisoned until she returns.
· An apostate's marriage becomes invalid.
Even in Muslim societies that do not officially enforce Islamic law, the author says apostates may still be persecuted, excluded, rejected, hated, beaten, insulted, mocked, cursed, despised, imprisoned, or killed. An apostate may lose the right to inherit family property and may lose contact with parents and children, face unemployment, have difficulty finding work again, and face possible physical injury. The author also claims law-enforcement officers may allow Muslims to kill apostates and governments may fail to prosecute the killers.
The author asks whether such treatment of apostates causes many people who are Muslim in name, even if they do not truly believe inside, to pretend outwardly that they still believe. He argues that harsh laws against leaving Islam are one reason relatively few Muslims convert to Christianity or other religions.
Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: [Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to show his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.] The author says this clearly cannot be reconciled with the way apostates are treated in Islam. He then asks: if Islam is truly the right path, why should it fear believers leaving, and why use violence to take away the freedom of Muslims and their children to choose?
After missionary work by the Swedish Missionary Society from 1892 to 1938, efforts to preach the gospel to Muslims in northwestern China almost disappeared. The author says Swedish missionaries worked and suffered greatly and led about 300 Uyghurs in four cities to believe in Jesus (Isa). Religious persecution and civil war, however, brought real loss and suffering to the churches. These converted Christians were tied together and were told that if they did not return to their former religion they would die. Before a group of Uyghur Christians were killed, the executioner is quoted as saying: [According to our law, I have a duty to sentence you to death because the message you preach has damaged our faith.] In 1938 the Swedish missionaries were expelled from China. The remaining believers were imprisoned near Kashgar, and later only six were left.
IV. Comparison with Christian Faith
By comparison, the Christian faith
· Jesus (Isa) lets people freely decide whether to follow him or leave him. (John 6:60–68) He asks those who want to follow him to think carefully about the cost and to follow with their whole heart. If not, the author says, he would rather they not follow. (Luke 9:57–62)
God (Allah) does not force people to follow Him. If someone leaves, God allows that person to decide freely, but He waits with hope and welcomes the person back. (Luke 15:11–32)
V. Issues Concerning Men and Women
Issues concerning men and women
The Quran:
(4:34) Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made them superior to women in some ways and because they spend their property.
Virtuous women are obedient and protect what should be hidden with Allah's protection. As for women whose disobedience you fear, you may advise them, refuse to share the same bed with them, and strike them. If they obey you, then do not seek a way to mistreat them. Allah is indeed Most High and Great.
(2:228) Men have a degree of rights above women. Allah is Almighty and All-Wise.
(4:3) You may choose women you like and marry two, three, or four. But if you fear that you cannot treat them fairly, then marry only one, or be satisfied with female slaves under your control. This is closer to fairness.
2:223. Your wives are like fields for you (the author comments that women become the property of men). You may cultivate them as you wish. Do good in advance for yourselves, fear Allah, know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers.
4:11. Allah gives you instructions concerning your children. A male receives the share of two females. If the deceased leaves more than two daughters, together they receive two-thirds of the inheritance. If there is only one daughter, she receives one-half. If the deceased has children, each parent receives one-sixth. If he has no children and only his parents inherit, his mother receives one-third. If he has several brothers or sisters, his mother receives one-sixth. This distribution is made after any bequest of the deceased has been fulfilled and his debts have been paid. You do not know whether your parents or your children are more beneficial to you. This is a rule sent down by Allah. Allah is indeed All-Knowing and All-Wise. 【The author comments: If both parents are still alive and there is one son and one daughter, the daughter gets 1/2, the son gets twice that... and the parents get 1/3... how is this supposed to be calculated?】
Quran 56:12–39 says: “They lie on beds decorated with jewels. Ever-young boys serve them with bowls, jars, and cups of the purest wine. This wine will not give them headaches or make them drunk. They choose fruits and the meat of birds that they like. They will also receive dark-eyed heavenly maidens (houris), pure like pearls in shells. This is a reward for what they did... I created these heavenly maidens and made them virgins, as close companions for them...”
The author says Quran 45:70–75 describes fair-skinned virgins in Paradise as a reward from Allah for Muslims.
These sexual teachings are then explained in Hadith 2687.
The Prophet Muhammad is quoted as saying: “The smallest reward for the people of Paradise is a home with 80,000 servants and 72 wives. Its dome is decorated with pearls, green gems, and rubies.” Its size is said to be equal to the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [outside Damascus] to Sana'a [in Yemen]. This is presented as the origin of the idea of 72 virgins.
Modern Muslim apologists, the author says, try to reduce the obvious material and sexual meaning of these descriptions. But, as the author says the Encyclopedia of Islam notes, even orthodox Muslim theologians such as al-Ghazali (died 1111) and Al-Ash'ari (died 935) “accepted physical sexual pleasure in Paradise.” The Quran commentator Al-Suyuti (died 1505) is then quoted as giving a very detailed sexual description. He says that every time a man sleeps with a heavenly maiden, she will again be a virgin; that the chosen men's sexual organs will never become soft and they will always remain sexually ready; that the feeling of sex will be so wonderful that nothing on earth is like it; and that each chosen man, besides his earthly wife, will marry 70 heavenly maidens whose bodies give great sexual pleasure.
Men can divorce their wives (the article cites Quran chapter 2, verses 227–223), while women have no right to divorce.
If a woman had two husbands in this life because she married twice, she is said to choose one of them. The author asks: if a man may have several wives, why may a woman not have several husbands? Muhammad had 9–12 wives, so why were ordinary men limited to four?
Sahih al-Bukhari records several statements attributed to Muhammad concerning women:
Women are said to be lower than men in intelligence and religion. (See 1:6:301)
Women are said to have a deficiency in mind. (3:48:826)
If a wife refuses to have sex with her husband and he goes to sleep angry, the angels will curse her until morning. (4:54:460)
Most of the people in Hell are women. (4:54:464)
“A people ruled by a woman will never succeed.” (5:59:709)
VI. Issues Concerning Muhammad's Moral Character
Issues concerning Muhammad's moral character
The author says Muhammad had sexual relations with 11 women in one night and also had sex during the daytime (Sahih al-Bukhari 268, 270, 284). The author also accuses him of raping Aisha when she was nine years old (Sahih al-Bukhari 5:58:234; 7:62:65, 88), and says the Hadith contains many records of Muhammad bathing and having sexual relations with the young Aisha, as well as a claim that he had sexual contact with her when she was six and engaged to him. The author says this went against the one-man, one-woman pattern of Adam and Eve in Genesis, which the Quran recognizes. Muhammad is said to have married 12 wives, not counting female slaves, while allowing his followers only four wives. The author also accuses him of using a revelation from an angel as a reason to marry Zaynab, who had been the wife of his adopted son Zayd, and calls this incestuous. The author also notes that Zaynab was Muhammad's cousin.
God (Allah) permitted Muhammad to have the wives to whom he had given dowries, his female slaves who were given to him as war booty, the daughters of his paternal uncles, paternal aunts, maternal uncles, and maternal aunts, and any Muslim woman who freely offered herself to Muhammad if he wanted to marry her. The author says this was a special permission for him that other Muslims could not use as a rule. (Quran 33:50–52)

“I think your Lord is always quick to satisfy your wishes and desires.” The author says Aisha, Muhammad's wife, said this to him. (Sahih al-Bukhari, volume 6, page 295)
Because Aisha was only nine and, in the author's words, too young to understand when she married Muhammad, who was over fifty and already had many wives, the author says one can imagine how happy the marriage was. Later, Aisha fell behind during a military journey and returned the next morning with a handsome man named Safwan bin al-Mu'attal. The author says Ali accused her of adultery, which led to the “Battle of the Camel,” then to the split of Islam into Sunni and Shia groups, followed by a thousand years of conflict and millions of deaths. In crude language, the author says the whole matter was basically about sex.
After Muhammad died, the young Aisha had to remain a widow. The author says that although Muhammad supported widows remarrying, he did not want his own wives to remarry, so a Quran verse was revealed. Quran 33:53 says: O believers! Do not enter the Prophet's homes unless you are invited for a meal. Do not enter and wait for the food to be ready. When you are invited, enter; after you have eaten, leave and do not stay for casual conversation, because that troubles the Prophet, although he is shy about asking you to leave. Allah is not shy about revealing the truth. When you ask the Prophet's wives for anything, ask from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. You should not trouble the Messenger, and after him you must never marry his wives, because in Allah's sight that would be a great sin. (The author comments that Muhammad used the names of angels and Allah to say things he was embarrassed to say himself.)

VII. Slavery and Female Slaves
The Quran approves of slavery. (Quran 58:3)
Muhammad taught that Muslim men could have sexual relations with female slaves. (Quran 4:3; 23:5–6; 33:50, 52; 70:29–30; Sahih al-Bukhari 3:34:432; 3:46:718; 3:47:765; 5:59:459, 637; 7:62:137; 9:93:506) Female slaves are described here as Muslim [war booty].
The author says Muhammad killed eight hundred Jews from Banu Qurayza and enslaved the rest. (Quran 33:26)
The author says Muhammad, the four caliphs, and Muslim leaders all owned many slaves, including Black people, Arabs, Egyptians, Jews, Christians, men, and women. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1:2:29; 1:8:439; 1:11:661; 5:57:50; 5:58:182; 5:59:512, 541; 7:65:341, 344, 346, 352, 371; 7:67:410, 413; 7:71:654; 7:72:734, 845; 9:83:23; 9:85:80; 9:86:100; 9:89:277, 293, 296; 9:92:462)
Sex with female slaves during peacetime
Quran chapter 23 was revealed before Muhammad moved from his home city to Medina in 622, while he was still living in Mecca. During the early years of his preaching, he did not start wars against anyone. So although he suffered some persecution, these years can be called a peaceful period.
Quran 23:5–6 says:
(Sayyid Abul A’La Maududi, *The Meaning of the Quran*,卷3, 237页)
*Most true believers strictly guard their private parts, except with their wives and those whom they lawfully possess, for in those cases they are not blamed.* (Sayyid Abul A'La Maududi, *The Meaning of the Quran*, vol. 3, p. 237)
The key words here are “those whom they lawfully possess.” Maududi (died 1979) was a respected Quran commentator. The article says he explained the simple meaning of this phrase as allowing sexual relations with female slaves.
Maududi wrote:
*Two kinds of women are excluded from the general command to guard one's private parts: (a) wives, and (b) women whom a man lawfully owns, that is, female slaves. Therefore, this verse clearly establishes the law that a man may have sexual relations with his female slave just as with his wife. The basis of the relationship is ownership, not marriage. If marriage were required, female slaves would have been included under wives and there would have been no need to mention them separately. (Same source, p. 241, note 7)*
In this section, the author says Maududi ignores or refuses to criticize an important point: Muhammad himself accepted the whole system of slavery and also accepted sexual relations between male owners and their female slaves. But how, the author asks, could Maududi and other devout Muslims criticize their prophet without seriously damaging Islam? The author argues that Muslims must still think critically about this for the sake of humanity.
It should also be noted that Quran 70:29–30, also revealed in Mecca, uses wording almost the same as Quran 23:5–6. Men are to remain sexually pure with everyone except their wives and female slaves. The author says this means men may have sex with these “two kinds” of women, using Maududi's words.

Sex with female slaves during wartime
After Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina, by the time Quran chapter 4 was revealed, he had already fought many battles and smaller conflicts. For example, in 624 he fought the people of Mecca at the Battle of Badr, and in 625 he fought them again at the Battle of Uhud. He also expelled the Jewish tribe of Qaynuqa in 624 and the Nadir tribe in 625. The article says he continued in Medina the policy of allowing male owners to have sexual relations with female slaves and also allowed his soldiers to have sex with enslaved female prisoners of war.
…
…
Quran 4:24 says:
*You are forbidden to marry women who already have husbands, except those under your control, such as female prisoners of war* … (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 319) (See also Quran 4:3 and 33:50.)
So, the author says, female prisoners were sometimes forced to marry their Muslim owners regardless of their existing marriage. In other words, owners were allowed to have sexual relations with enslaved people treated as human property.
In his comment on this verse, Maududi says it is lawful for Muslim fighters to marry female prisoners of war even if their husbands are still alive. But what if a husband is captured together with his wife? Maududi cites one school of law saying Muslims may not marry such a woman, while two other schools say the marriage is ended when both husband and wife are captured. (Note 44)
The author says this sexual injustice should be condemned, but argues that the Quran presents it as something Allah permits.
As the author says readers might expect, the Hadith keeps this practice that the Quran is said to have revealed.
Hadith are records of Muhammad's words and actions outside the Quran. Bukhari (died 870) is presented here as the most reliable collector and compiler of Hadith.
The article says the Hadith shows Muslim fighters actually having sexual relations with captured women whether the women were married or not. In the next passage, “Khumus” means one-fifth of the war booty.
Ali, Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, had just taken a relaxing bath. Why?
*先知派阿里到哈立德(Khalid),去把Khumus(五分之一的战利品)带来… *
*The Prophet sent Ali to Khalid to bring the Khumus, the one-fifth share of the war booty... Ali took a bath after having sexual relations with a female slave from the Khumus.*
How did Muhammad respond to the person who disliked Ali's sexual behavior?
*Do you dislike Ali for doing this? ... Do not hate him, because he deserves even more than this from the Khumus.* (Sahih al-Bukhari 5:59:637, Cmje)
So, the author says, Muhammad casually treated a female slave from the one-fifth share of war booty as something that could be used sexually. Ali is a Muslim hero and the husband of Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad and his first wife Khadija. The author asks how a prophet presented as a model for the world could criticize his son-in-law for having sex with a female slave. The author adds that slaves were treated as permitted prey and says the Quran supports this.
The article also says Muslim fighters were not to practice *withdrawal* when having sex with captured women, but not for the reason the author thinks would be expected, namely simple justice.
While away from their wives on a military campaign, Muslim fighters are quoted as saying: “We captured Arab prisoners. We desired women. Sexual abstinence was difficult for us, and we wanted to practice *withdrawal*.” They asked the Prophet about this. The author says it is important to notice what Muhammad did not say.
He did not scold them or forbid the act as immoral. Instead, the author says, he moved into theology and a strange teaching about destiny:
*It is better for you not to do it, meaning withdrawal. No person who is destined to exist will fail to exist before the Day of Resurrection.* (Sahih al-Bukhari; the article also refers to similar reports at 5:59:459 and 8:77:600, Cmje.)
The author explains this as meaning that these Muslims should stop withdrawal and complete intercourse. Destiny would decide who would be born. The author criticizes Muhammad for not using that moment to forbid what the author calls an extremely immoral practice.
It is one thing for some soldiers in any army to rape women. Every army can have criminal soldiers who commit such wrong acts.
But, the author says, it is another thing to put rape into sacred scripture.
The author says Islam made rape legal by putting it into a legal code.
The author says it is deeply disappointing that the Quran did not abolish this sexual crime, and argues that it should have said in the clearest words: You must never have sexual relations with female slaves under any circumstances!
VIII. Conclusion and Historical Discussion of Slavery
Conclusion
Some people may argue that before the American Civil War (1861–1865), American slave owners also committed sexual crimes against enslaved people. So, they may ask, what right do Christians or Americans, who are not the same group, have to criticize Islam?
The author answers that the two situations are different. First, he says it is wrong to compare the United States with the Muslim community founded by Muhammad, who claimed revelation from God. Instead, he argues that the founder of one religion, Jesus, should be compared with the founder of another, Muhammad. Second, he says there is nowhere in the New Testament where God gives men, whether Christians or secular people, permission to have sexual relations with female slaves. He says such behavior goes against the spirit of Jesus' ministry and the whole New Testament. New Testament writers, he says, regarded Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. If Americans did such things in earlier times, then, according to the author, they were not following God's law. By contrast, he argues that the Quran made this sexual wrongdoing into law and declared it lawful while claiming that the book came from Allah through Gabriel to Muhammad. The author says any clear-thinking person can see that having sex with a woman in the desperate condition of slavery is wrong.
The author says that even today, although Arab countries abolished slavery under pressure from Europe and the United States, three Islamic countries in Africa still have widespread slavery. He claims that one-fifth of Mauritania's population are slaves, treated like speaking livestock.
Sudan: the author says a slave could be sold for 15 US dollars. During the period when Arabs, described here as followers of Muhammad, invaded Egypt, they moved south along the Nile, attacked Black villages in Sudan, killed adult men, and captured women and children as slaves. The article says this began a system of slavery in Sudan that continued into modern times.
After Sudan became independent from colonial rule, it tried to abolish slavery. But after the second civil war began in the early 1980s, the Khartoum government depended on Arab nomadic tribes for fighting. The author says the government therefore tolerated their capture of women and children as slaves, and the slave trade returned in Sudan.
Slavery has a long history in Niger, where the buying and selling of slaves continued for more than a thousand years. When the French entered Niger in the nineteenth century, they promised to abolish slavery. The author says they later found this extremely difficult because, in his account, Islamic belief supported the system and powerful slave owners had great influence. Without their cooperation, slavery could not be ended. In 2003, the Niger government passed a law forbidding slave owners from punishing slaves without reason, but the author says the law became ineffective in practice.
The author says the crimes of the famous Zanzibar slave market were mainly committed by Muslims.
| Even in the relatively wealthy Gulf countries, the author says many male and female servants still have the social status of slaves, although they may be well dressed. A Saudi prince once lost his temper and killed his male servant in Britain and is still serving a prison sentence. The author asks: what if this had happened in Saudi Arabia?

IX. Military Actions and Related Arguments
Muhammad robbed and killed members of Meccan trade caravans
The author says Muhammad personally took part in military actions and also in killing his enemies; that he killed people, took prisoners, and used war booty; and that there are many records of this in the Hadith.
The author says that from 624 to 627 Muhammad eliminated three Jewish tribes living in Medina: Kaynuka, Banu Quraydhah, and Kurayza. After Muhammad strengthened his power in Medina, the author says he ordered special agents to kill several personal enemies, especially poets who mocked him. The author describes this as assassination and revenge. During the siege of Medina, some Jews in the city are said to have cooperated with the enemy. After victory, the author says Muhammad approved digging mass graves and killing hundreds of members of the tribe with swords.
穆罕默德杀人的方式可以很残酷,如于公元628在麦地那处决Uraynah氏族的八个人时,斩他们的手,脚,用烧红的铁烙眼,不给水 喝,丢弃在多石的Harra(布哈里圣训1:4:234;2:24:577;4:52:261;5:59:505;7:71:623;8:82:797)
The author says Muhammad could kill people in very cruel ways. As an example, he cites the execution of eight men of the Uraynah group in Medina in 628, saying their hands and feet were cut off, their eyes were burned with hot iron, they were denied water, and they were left in the rocky area of Harra. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1:4:234; 2:24:577; 4:52:261; 5:59:505; 7:71:623; 8:82:797)
o Those who remember God (Allah) much, meaning Muslims, can take Muhammad as an excellent example. (Quran 33:21)
o Muhammad is described in this way:
§ Muhammad has a great character. (Quran 68:4)
§ Muhammad is neither lost nor mistaken, and he does not speak from personal desire. (Quran 53:2–3)
· Muslims use Muhammad's words and actions as a model for their own conduct and treatment of others.
· Muhammad is said to place his authority to make judgments alongside the authority of God (Allah). (Quran 33:36)
· Muhammad has sins.
o Muhammad should ask God (Allah) for forgiveness for his faults. (Quran 4:106; 40:55; 47:19; 110:3)
o Muhammad asks God (Allah) to forgive his past sins and future sins, both secret and public. (Sahih al-Bukhari 8:75:379; 9:93:482)
o The Quran says God (Allah) forgives Muhammad's past and future faults. (Quran 48:2)
§ The author says this shows that Muhammad had sinned and knew he would sin again.
§ The Quran tells Muslims to bless Muhammad and wish him peace. (Quran 33:56)
§ Muslims around the world, whenever they mention Muhammad's name, also pray for him: [May God (Allah) pray for him, have mercy on him, and give him peace.] The author interprets this as meaning that Muhammad does not yet have peace, is not yet saved, and is not with God (Allah).
The author says he has recently been reading the Agama Sutras and finds Buddhist theory very complicated. He then argues that Islam succeeded partly because, in his view, it was very suitable for lower-class people with little education and weak learning ability, using language that is direct and shallow. He says each rule is written clearly enough for farmers and blacksmiths to read. In his description, Islam regulates life and thought in detail, gives people a label, gives them a group, creates an enemy, and completes a process of indoctrination. The author says it conditionally permits violence and taking property, and that religious service such as fighting in the way of the Lord can cancel sin. He argues that this lets greedy and low-minded people satisfy their desires while also having a noble name and a system that gives psychological comfort. He says this explains why Islam expanded rapidly during the age of simple weapons and why raiding nomadic peoples converted to it. The author then makes comparisons between Muslims and Jews in the modern knowledge economy, claiming that more than a billion Muslims with oil wealth have produced almost no Nobel science winners or major inventions, while around ten million Jews have won nearly one hundred Nobel science prizes and produced thinkers and scientists who changed the world. He notes that Arabs and Jews are both descendants of Abraham and Semitic peoples, but then makes the polemical claim that one group produces almost all terrorists while the other produces most Nobel scientists. He asks why and answers that the difference is religion. He says many terrorists share the feature of fighting for Islamic jihad and asks who has heard of Buddhists carrying out holy war to kill people of other religions.
At the same time, the author says Islam is unlike Buddhism, where doing good may bring good results even without sudden enlightenment, so a person may receive a better rebirth. He claims that in Islam, killing or robbery can count as good deeds if done for Islam, while even a person who sacrifices himself to save many people or makes the world better will go to Hell if he is not Muslim. The author therefore says Muslims are often unreasonable and deeply discriminate against non-Muslims, considering them unclean and of lower value. He says this can be used to justify excluding them from mosques, enslaving them, or killing them. During Ottoman rule, the author says taxes, laws, military pressure, and the well-known blood tax were used to pressure non-Muslims to convert to Islam. Christians and Jews who kept their faith were called “rayah,” which the author explains here as meaning animals.

X. Quranic Descriptions of Unbelievers
The Quran's descriptions of the final condition of “unbelievers,” which the author identifies as non-Muslims:
Whether you warn the unbelievers or not is the same for them; they will not believe. (2:6)
Allah has sealed their hearts and ears, and there is a covering over their eyes. They will receive a great punishment. (2:7)
Those who do not believe and deny My signs are people of the Fire; they will remain there forever. (2:36)
Know that Allah is hostile to unbelieving people. (2:98)
Those who remain unbelievers throughout life and die in unbelief will be rejected by Allah and cursed by the angels and all mankind. (2:161)
They will remain in Hell forever. Their punishment will not be reduced, and they will receive no delay. (2:162)
The wealth and children of unbelievers cannot help them at all against Allah's punishment. These people are fuel for Hell. (3:10)
Their condition is like the people of Pharaoh and the peoples before them. They denied Allah's signs, so Allah punished them for their sins. Allah's punishment is severe. (3:11)
Say to the unbelievers: “You will be defeated and gathered into Hell. What a terrible resting place.” (3:12)
Give those who do not believe in Allah's signs the “good news” of a painful punishment. (3:21)
As for those who do not believe, I will severely punish them in this world and the next, and they will have no helpers. (3:56)
Those who did not believe in life and still do not believe at death would not be accepted even if they offered a whole earth full of gold as payment. They will receive painful punishment and have no helpers. (3:91)
Unbelievers should not think that My giving them more time is good for them. I give them more time only so that their sins may increase. They will receive a humiliating punishment. (3:178)
Those who do not believe in My signs, I will certainly put into the Fire. Whenever their skin is burned, I will replace it with new skin so that they may continue to taste the punishment. Allah is Almighty and All-Wise. (4:56)
Unbelievers will suffer punishment by fire. (8:14)
Taste the punishment because of your unbelief. (8:35)
The unbelievers spend their money to stop people from following Allah's way. After spending it, they will regret it and be defeated. The unbelievers will be gathered into Hell. (8:36)
Fight them until persecution is removed and all religion belongs to Allah. (8:39)
Give the unbelievers the “good news” of a painful punishment. (9:3)
Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger will receive punishment by fire and remain there forever? That is a great humiliation. (9:63)
The unbelievers will continue to suffer disasters because of what they have done, or disasters will strike near their homes, until Allah's promise comes. Allah does not break His promise. (13:31)
The unbelievers said to the messengers among their own people: “We will certainly drive you out of our land, unless you return to our religion.” Their Lord then revealed: “I will certainly destroy the wrongdoers.” (14:13)
The good deeds of unbelievers are like a pile of ashes blown away by a strong wind on a stormy day. They will gain nothing from what they worked for. This is a deep error. (14:18)
For those who do not believe and block the way of the Lord, I will increase their punishment because of the harm they cause. (16:88)
Allah will not guide those who do not believe in His signs, and they will receive a painful punishment. (16:104)
Clothes of fire have been prepared for the unbelievers, and boiling water will be poured over their heads. (22:19)
Their insides and their skin will be melted by the boiling water. (22:20)
They will be beaten with iron rods. (22:21)
Whenever they try to escape from Hell because of their suffering, they will be forced back. “Taste the punishment of burning!” (22:22)
Those who do not believe in Allah's signs or in meeting Him have lost hope in My mercy. They will receive a painful punishment. (29:22)
Your final home is Hell, and you will have no helpers. (29:25)
They ask you to bring the punishment quickly. Hell will surely surround the unbelievers. (29:54)
On that day, punishment will come upon them from above and below. He will say: “Taste the result of what you did.” (29:55)
As for those who do not believe, deny My signs, and deny the meeting in the next world, they will be held in punishment. (30:16)
Unbelievers will suffer the result of their unbelief, while those who do good prepare a place for themselves. (30:44)
As for the disobedient, their final home is Hell. Whenever they try to leave, they will be forced back. They will be told: “Taste the punishment by fire that you used to deny.” (32:20)
I let them enjoy a little happiness, and then I force them toward severe punishment. (32:24)
Say: “On the Day of Judgment, belief will not help the unbelievers, and they will not be given more time.” (32:29)
They will be rejected. Wherever they are found, they will be captured and killed. (33:61)
Allah has rejected the unbelievers and prepared a blazing fire for them. (33:64)
They will remain there forever and will find neither protector nor helper. (33:65)
On the day when their faces are turned over in the Fire, they will say: “We wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.” (33:66)
They will say: “Our Lord, we obeyed our leaders and our great men, and they led us away from the right path.” (33:67)
“Our Lord, give them double punishment and reject them severely.” (33:68)
The unbelievers will suffer the fire of Hell. They will not be allowed to die, and their punishment will not be reduced. This is how every ungrateful person is repaid. (35:36)
There they will cry: “Our Lord, bring us out, and we will change and do good.” Were you not given a long enough life for a person who could learn to learn? A warner also came to you. So taste the punishment. Wrongdoers have no helpers. (35:37)
The unbelievers will be driven to Hell in groups. When they arrive and its gates are opened, the angels guarding it will ask: “Did messengers from among your own people not come to recite your Lord's signs and warn you about meeting this day?” They will answer: “Yes.” The judgment of punishment will then be confirmed against the unbelievers. (39:71)
They will be asked: “Did messengers from among your own people not show you clear proofs?” They will say: “Yes.” The angels will say: “Then pray, but the prayer of unbelievers is lost in error.” (40:50)
Your Lord says: “Call on Me and I will answer you. Those who refuse to worship Me will enter Hell in humiliation.” (40:60)
I will make the unbelievers taste severe punishment, and I will repay their evil deeds with the worst reward. (41:27)
That is the reward of Allah's enemies: Hell. They will have a permanent home there because they denied My signs. (41:28)
As for the unbelievers, it will be said: “Were My signs not recited to you? But you were proud, and you were a sinful people.” (45:31)
The evil deeds they did will become clear to them, and the punishment they mocked will come upon them. (45:33)
They will be told: “Today I ignore you, just as you ignored the meeting of this day. Your final home is Hell, and you have no helpers.” (45:34)
That is because you treated Allah's signs as a joke and were deceived by the life of this world. Today they will not be brought out of Hell, and they will not be allowed to make things right. (45:35)
The unbelievers will fall, and Allah will make their good deeds useless. (47:8)
The unbelievers enjoy this world and eat like animals. Hell will be their final home. (47:12)
Those who do not believe, block the way of the Lord, and oppose the Messenger after knowing the right way cannot harm Allah at all. He will make their deeds useless. (47:32)
Those who do not believe, block the way of the Lord, and die as unbelievers will never be forgiven by Allah. (47:34)
For those who do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, I have prepared Hell. (48:13)
Those who do not believe and deny My signs are people of the Fire. They will remain there forever. What a terrible final home. (64:10)
O Prophet! Struggle against the unbelievers and deal with them severely. Their final home is Hell, and it is a terrible destination. (66:9)
Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger will receive punishment in Hell and remain there forever. (72:23)
There they will not sleep and will not taste any drink. (78:24)
They will drink only boiling water and pus. (78:25)
So give them the “good news” of a painful punishment. (84:24)
Therefore, the author concludes that if Muslims successfully establish Sharia law, non-Muslims and women will live in a very miserable condition.

· Under Islamic rule, the author says non-Muslims, including Jews and Christians, are second-class citizens with a lower status than Muslims. The rules said to apply to them include the following:
o The Pact or regulations of Umar
§ They must pay a heavy head tax, the jizya (Quran 9:29), as well as land tax.
§ They are not allowed to serve in the army.
§ They are not allowed to build new churches, temples, or synagogues. They may only repair old ones and may not expand them.
§ They are not allowed to place crosses on houses or churches.
§ They may not hold public religious meetings.
§ Their houses may not be built higher than Muslim houses.
§ Their clothing must be different from Muslim clothing, usually with a special sign for identification.
§ They are not allowed to ride horses and may ride only mules or donkeys.
§ They must show respect to Muslims, for example by giving up their seats.
o According to Islamic jurists, the author lists additional rules:
§ They may not spread their faith.
§ They may not pray or read scripture loudly enough for Muslims to hear.
§ They may not publicly sell their religious books and may distribute or sell them only among themselves.
§ They may not use radio, television, newspapers, magazines, or other media to broadcast or publish their religious ceremonies.
§ Their testimony in court does not have the same legal weight as the testimony of Muslims.
§ They are not allowed to carry their own weapons.
§ They are separated into minority neighborhoods so that they remain in a lower social position politically and economically.
· Polytheists are not allowed to approach the Sacred Mosque. (Quran 9:28)
· If a Muslim kills a non-Muslim, the author says the Muslim does not have to receive the death penalty. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:283; 9:83:50)
· If a non-Muslim kills a Muslim, the author says Islamic law requires the death penalty.
· Because the Quran says, [God (Allah) will never give unbelievers a way over believers] (Quran 4:141), the author says a Muslim business owner may not give a non-Muslim authority over a Muslim worker, and that non-Muslims have no honor. (Quran 63:8)
· The Quran teaches Muslims, according to the author:
o Do not take Jews and Christians as allies. (Quran 5:51)
o Do not have loving friendship with non-Muslims. (Quran 58:22)
· Muhammad wanted all unbelievers to be driven out of Arabia. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:53:393)
Although the Quran says there is no compulsion in religion, the author argues that this does not mean a person is free not to believe in Islam. Besides persecuted Coptic Christians, he mentions Baha'i believers in the Islamic world, including loss of civil rights and execution of leaders.
The author lists events and practices he associates with Islam: the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, which he calls the world's second-largest Buddha statues; the alleged burning of the Library of Alexandria in 642; damage to the pyramids and an unsuccessful attempt to destroy them; destruction of ancient Buddhist cave paintings in the Western Regions; terrorism; the Armenian massacres; killings during the Tongzhi Hui rebellions in Shaanxi and Gansu; the Quanzhou massacre; Pu Shougeng's rebellion against the Song dynasty and killing of members of the royal family; honor killings; the fall of Persian, Egyptian, and Byzantine civilization; sexual abuse of young girls; polygamy and beating women; thousands of honor killings every year in which fathers or brothers kill daughters, sons, sisters, or brothers; religious punishments, such as Saudi religious police executing people for acts said to violate religious law, including witchcraft, drinking alcohol, conversion, or homosexuality; executions in Iran for homosexuality, drinking, and changing religion; large-scale drug trafficking in northwestern China; widespread sexual harassment and rape in Egypt; anti-Chinese killings in Indonesia; and attacks on people of other religions around the world. He also mentions violence by Muslims against Hindus and Sikhs in India, killings of Buddhists in southern Myanmar, attacks connected with Salman Rushdie and Theo van Gogh, the killing of a Korean priest, and the trade in Black slaves. The author adds that these are only the cases he personally knows about.
The author says a poem in the *Compendium of the Turkic Languages* describes jihad with words like: “We flowed like a flood, entered the city, destroyed Buddhist temples, and defecated on Buddhist statues...” He also says *A Brief History of Islamic Khanates in Xinjiang* records many cases in Central Asia and Xinjiang in which Muslims killed Buddhists and destroyed temples.
P.S. The author says the objectification of women and rewards based on taking slaves are also part of the reward system of Islamic political violence.
The author says it is correct that Muslims are not the same as terrorists, but he claims there is a strong statistical relationship between Islam and violent terrorism. He argues that using physical destruction to solve disagreements, from the time of Muhammad's preaching, through the Hashshashin, to modern terrorist groups and sectarian killings, cannot be separated from Islamic teachings.

Today, a train station and an airport in Belgium were bombed at the same time. Police arrested Muslim suspects. The commenter claims that tens of thousands of Muslim residents not only protected the suspects but also used stones and demonstrations to defend these “heroes.” The commenter argues that if terrorism has nothing to do with a “religion of peace,” it is hard to explain why Muslim areas in Belgium, where people from different ethnic groups are united mainly by a common religion, would react in this way. The commenter says these immigrants have only one thing in common.
People whose values are not stable should never read the Quran, the commenter says, because it may quickly stir up violent desires and make them twisted or abnormal.
It seems the Quran is more like a political work. Different groups can all choose words from it that support their own position. |
I really hope those who defend it and argue for it can see this... Every time I try to use these points to answer them, I run into the reply word limit.
| In the Crusades, two violent religions were fighting each other. Now one has moved away from politics and the military, while the other is still stuck in the past. That is the difference...

These Islamic armies created one of the longest history of military conquests in the world. They showed incredible power in expanding their lands:
Huge Areas of War: They started from the Arabian Peninsula. To the west, they crossed the sea to capture Spain and attack France. To the east, they crossed the mountains to defeat the Chinese army and attack deep into India.
Two Main Groups: For the first 600 years, the Arabs led fast attacks to conquer and capture large parts of the Persian and Byzantine Empires. For the next 400 years, the Ottoman Turks took over, capturing Constantinople, conquering the Balkans, and twice attacking Vienna.
