— A Response to “How Has the Idealized Story of the Puritans Confused Chinese Christians?”

I recently read an online article about the Puritans and American history. It asks whether some Christians have made the Puritans look too perfect.

This question deserves serious thought.

The Puritans were not perfect, and America is not the kingdom of heaven.

We should not describe the Puritans as people without sin. We should not describe America as a perfect country built fully on the Bible.

However, when we criticize one one-sided story, we must not create another one-sided story.

The article gives many details about the Puritans’ mistakes, but it does not study their contributions as deeply.

It stresses the fight against the Puritans’ religious laws. But it does not fully discuss Christians who also worked for religious freedom.

It also connects this view of American history with the attitudes of Chinese Christians. But it does not give enough evidence to prove this cause and effect.

So we need to study these questions through history, clear reasoning, and Reformed theology.

1. The Puritans Were Not America's Only Founders, but They Laid Important Foundations

The article says that the Puritans did not originally establish the United States.

In a strict historical sense, this is true.

When the Mayflower Compact was signed in 1620, the United States did not yet exist as an independent country.

When John Winthrop led the Puritans to establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, the United States we know today did not exist either.

America declared independence in 1776 and wrote its federal Constitution in 1787.

British law, different religious groups, Enlightenment ideas, colonial self-government, politics, and business all helped shape America.

But the people who officially founded a country are not always the same people who laid the foundations of its culture.

Many ancient Chinese thinkers did not establish modern China, but they deeply shaped Chinese culture.

In the same way, the Puritans did not directly establish America in 1776, but they still laid important social and political foundations.

1620: The Mayflower Compact.

This document clearly says that the journey was for God's glory, the growth of the Christian faith, and the honor of the English king and country.

The people signed an agreement to form a political community. They agreed to make and obey laws for the common good.

It was not a modern democratic constitution. But it was an important early document about agreement and self-government in North America.

[Image 1: The signing of the Mayflower Compact; a later historical painting.]

1630: The Massachusetts Bay Puritan Colony.

The Puritans tried to build a society based on their understanding of the Bible. They valued covenant, family, education, public morality, and local self-government.

Their system was very different from modern democracy, but it became an important foundation for later New England society.

[Image 2: A portrait of the Puritan leader John Winthrop.]

1647: The Massachusetts Education Law.

This law is often called the Old Deluder Satan Act.

The law said that one of Satan's tricks was to keep people from knowing the Bible.

So it required towns of a certain size to hire teachers. Larger towns also had to open grammar schools.

This law clearly connected public education with reading the Bible.

[Image 3: A historical document of the 1647 Massachusetts education law.]

Of course, other religious groups and traditions also helped American education.

But original historical documents show that the Puritans helped education because of their faith.

These facts are not stories invented by later conservative Christians.

What we really need to study is the role the Puritans played in the growth of American culture.

The Puritans were not America's only founders, but they were still important founders.

2. The Puritans Persecuted Some Religious Groups, but This Does Not Prove Reformed Faith Is Wrong

The article mentions Anne Hutchinson's banishment and the execution of four Quakers.

We must take these events seriously.

In 1637, Hutchinson was tried and ordered to leave because of serious religious and political conflicts in Massachusetts.

But the conflict was not simply about her belief that faith was a private matter.

It also involved grace, salvation, direct revelation, church leaders' authority, and social order.

So we should not turn a complex historical event into a simple modern story about opposing religious oppression.

The execution of four Quakers was indeed serious religious persecution.

Between 1659 and 1661, Massachusetts executed four Quakers.

The colonial government also used prison, whipping, and banishment.

These actions must be examined seriously through history and theology.

But we must separate three questions.

First, did these people's religious teachings agree with the Bible?

Second, did the government have the right to punish them by force?

Third, did the Puritans who persecuted them represent all Reformed teaching?

Even if a teaching is wrong, this does not mean the government may execute those who believe it.

Second Corinthians 10:4 says:

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. They have power from God to destroy strongholds.” (Simple English rendering.)

In John 18:36, Jesus says:

“My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over. But my kingdom is not from this world.” (Simple English rendering.)

These verses remind us that the church's spiritual authority and the government's power are not the same thing.

However, we must not ignore problems in early Reformed political theology.

For example, Chapter 23, Section 3 of the original 1646 Westminster Confession gave government officials broad duties in religion.

Later, American Presbyterians changed this section to limit government control over churches.

Recognizing problems in early Reformed thought does not mean that all Reformed teaching is wrong.

A person's failure does not automatically prove that the truth he teaches is false.

But we must not defend everything a person does just because he teaches the right faith.

Reformed faith calls us to return to the Bible again and again. The Bible must test our teaching, systems, and lives.

3. Modern Religious Freedom Did Not Grow Only Through Opposition to Christianity

The article says that religious freedom in America grew largely through opposition to the Puritans' close union of church and government.

This idea has some historical support, but it is not the whole story.

Some people who worked for religious freedom were Christians themselves.

They used their own faith to criticize laws that forced people to follow a religion.

Roger Williams is an important example.

[Image 4: Roger Williams, a founder of Rhode Island and a supporter of religious freedom.]

Williams was a minister with a Puritan background.

He was banished because of religious and political disagreements in Massachusetts.

In 1636, he founded Providence, which later became part of the beginning of Rhode Island.

He believed the government should not force people to follow a religion. He supported religious tolerance.

His story shows that people who opposed the Puritans' religious laws were not always against Christianity.

They sometimes used their Christian beliefs to correct the mistakes of other Christians.

Baptists, Quakers, and other Christian groups also helped religious freedom grow.

Enlightenment ideas, British law, and leaders such as Jefferson and Madison also played important roles.

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom of 1786 was an important step.

So the history of American religious freedom includes both opposition to some Puritan laws and reform within Christianity.

Opposing the mistakes of some Christians is not the same as opposing Christianity itself.

We must not ignore the Christian faith of reformers just because they fought against the mistakes of other Christians.

4. We Must Use the Same Standard for Historical Mistakes and Contributions

The article explains Puritan religious persecution in detail. But it does not study their work in education, local government, and political agreements in the same depth.

This may give readers an unbalanced view of history.

The Puritans persecuted people who disagreed with them about religion. This is a historical fact.

The Puritans also supported education, self-government, and government based on agreements. These are historical facts too.

Their contributions do not make their persecution right.

In the same way, their persecution does not erase their real contributions.

We need to use the same standard when studying slavery in America.

Some Christians and churches supported slavery. We must not hide this history.

But Quakers, some evangelical Christians, and other believers also opposed slavery because of their faith.

The movement to end slavery was also shaped by business, politics, law, and other ideas.

We must not decide in advance that support for slavery came from Christianity, while opposition to slavery came only from Enlightenment ideas.

We also must not give Christianity all the credit for ending slavery while blaming society alone for Christians who supported it.

Careful history should study real people, systems, ideas, and their actual effects.

We must not first decide whom to praise or blame and then look only for evidence that supports our view.

We should not create one historical bias while trying to correct another.

5. A Political Leader's Use of an Idea Does Not Prove That the Idea Is Wrong

The article discusses how Winthrop's “city upon a hill” became an important symbol in American politics.

Winthrop first stressed that a community claiming to have a covenant with God must carry moral and spiritual duties.

If they broke their promises, they would be put to shame before the world.

Later, leaders such as Kennedy and Reagan used these words in different situations and gave them new political meanings.

This change is worth studying, but it does not prove that Winthrop's original religious message had no value.

In the same way, when a political movement uses a historical idea, that alone does not prove the idea is false.

The article raises a similar problem when it discusses Francis Schaeffer.

[Image 5: Francis Schaeffer, a Christian thinker and defender of the faith with a Reformed background.]

In books such as How Should We Then Live? and A Christian Manifesto, Schaeffer discussed Western culture, worldview, morality, law, and public life.

One of his important ideas was that changes in worldview can change how a society understands morality, law, and culture.

Of course, we can question his study of history.

For example, we can ask whether he described each historical period correctly and whether he showed enough evidence of cause and effect.

But we should not call his ideas a simple political story only because his books influenced conservative American Christians.

The relationship between ideas and social systems is an important subject for historical study.

We cannot say that Christianity caused every success in the West or that secularization caused every later problem.

But we also cannot deny that changes in religious beliefs may affect a society's morals, laws, and culture.

6. Rejecting the Idea of a Holy America Does Not Mean Denying Christianity's Contributions

The article often mentions Christian nationalism and the ways American politics has reinterpreted Puritan history.

We need to separate three questions.

First, did Christianity have an important influence on American history and culture?

Second, should America give importance to Christian morals in public life?

Third, is America a nation specially chosen by God, with a special place in God's plan of salvation?

The first question needs historical evidence. The second concerns theology and public policy. The third concerns covenant theology.

In Reformed covenant theology, Israel in the Old Testament had a special covenant with God.

But this does not mean that any modern nation can take Israel's special place in the history of salvation.

First Peter 2:9 says:

“But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, and God's own people. You are to tell others about the One who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (Simple English rendering.)

Here, the holy nation means God's people in Christ, not America or any other modern country.

Philippians 3:20 says:

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and we wait for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from there.” (Simple English rendering.)

So Christians may love their country and take part in public life, but they must not treat any earthly nation as God's kingdom.

A country's wealth, power, or political system does not prove that God is more pleased with it than with other countries.

However, rejecting the idea that America is holy does not give us a reason to deny Christianity's historical contributions.

America is not God's kingdom, but Christianity truly helped shape some of its systems and culture.

7. Has the Story of the Puritans Really Confused Chinese Christians?

This is the main question in the article's title, and it needs the strongest evidence.

The author believes that some Chinese Christians admire the Puritans and America too much. As a result, they may lose their understanding of and connection to their own society.

This may happen, but we need careful research.

How many Chinese Christians actually believe the historical story the author criticizes?

Does their understanding of America mainly come from Puritan history?

How have their attitudes toward their own society changed?

How much of this change was really caused by their views of Puritan history?

The article does not provide enough surveys, interviews, or real examples to prove these links.

So this idea may be a question for research, but it should not be treated as a proven general fact.

Also, Chinese Christians may have many different reasons for moving to another country.

Some move for work, some for their children's education, and some to join family. Others seek greater religious freedom and legal protection.

We cannot say someone has been misled by a story about America simply because he has a positive view of the country.

We also cannot say that someone no longer understands his homeland simply because he has moved away.

Acts 8:1 says:

“On that day, great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem. Except for the apostles, the believers were scattered through Judea and Samaria.” (Simple English rendering.)

Acts 9:23–25 also says that Saul's life was in danger. The disciples lowered him in a basket through an opening in the city wall so he could escape from Damascus.

These verses show that in some situations, leaving a place does not mean a Christian lacks faith.

Of course, this does not mean all Christians should leave their homes.

Some may be called to stay, while others may need to go elsewhere.

Such choices should be made by considering each person's situation, family duties, and duties before God.

We should be careful not to treat any country as perfect. We should not treat the desire for religious freedom as wrong.

8. How Should We View the Puritans from a Reformed Perspective?

First, we believe the truth revealed in the Bible. We do not place our faith in the Puritans, Calvin, Luther, or any other historical person.

The Puritans are worth studying, but they are not our highest standard.

Second Timothy 3:16–17 says:

“All Scripture comes from God. It is useful for teaching, showing what is wrong, correcting us, and training us to do what is right. It prepares God's people for every good work.” (Simple English rendering.)

The Bible is the highest standard for Christian faith and life.

When Puritan ideas and actions agree with the Bible, we can learn from them.

When they go against the Bible, we should point out their mistakes.

This does not reject Reformed faith. It shows what it means to keep returning to God's Word.

Romans 3:23 says:

“For everyone has sinned and falls short of God's glory.” (Simple English rendering.)

The Puritans were also sinners, and they also needed God's grace.

But a person's sin does not make all his historical contributions worthless.

For example, if a doctor does something seriously wrong, this does not prove that all his medical research is false.

In the same way, the Puritans' mistakes about religious force do not automatically cancel their work in education, theology, and society.

But if their mistakes came from their understanding of doctrine or the design of their system, we must study and correct those problems.

To keep reforming means to keep testing our traditions, systems, and actions by the Bible.

9. We Must Be Careful About Two Opposite Kinds of Historical Bias

Have some people made the Puritans look too perfect?

Yes, this has happened.

Have some Christians described America as a perfect Christian nation?

Yes, this has happened too.

But if we ignore the Puritans' real contributions while correcting an idealized story, we only move from one one-sided story to another.

Christianity's influence on Western culture does not need to be exaggerated. It should not be erased because of historical sins either.

Some Puritan systems offer lessons worth learning. Others deserve serious criticism.

American history was shaped by Christianity, other religions, different ideas, and economic and political forces.

We need to recognize all these facts together.

The same is true for Chinese Christians.

We do not need to make America look perfect. We also do not need to deny useful lessons from other countries to show love for our homeland.

Understanding our own society and learning the history of other cultures are not in conflict.

Loving our homeland does not mean we must agree with every system or situation there.

Mature faith does not defend any country or historical person without question. It keeps returning to the truth.

Conclusion: Christianity Does Not Need a Perfect History, but We Must Face History Honestly

At the end, the article says Christianity does not need an idealized American history to prove its value.

This is a point we can agree with.

But we can say more: the truth of Christianity does not depend on the power of any country or the perfection of any generation of Christians.

The heart of Christianity is the truth revealed in the Bible and the person, saving work, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We study history to understand God's care and rule, human sin, and the effects of faith in the real world.

We do not need to make the Puritans into perfect saints. We also do not need to erase their contributions because of their mistakes.

We must not treat America as God's kingdom, but we can recognize that Christianity helped shape some American systems and culture.

Historical facts should be studied fairly. They should not be forced to fit the views we already hold.

Otherwise, while we criticize others for using history to promote their beliefs, we may be doing the same thing for another point of view.

Correcting one historical bias should not create another.

True reformation means returning to the Bible again and again and letting God's Word test our ideas, systems, and actions.

As Isaiah 8:20 says:

“Look to God's teaching and his Word. If what people say does not agree with it, they have no light.” (Simple English rendering.)

This should guide us when we study the Puritans, church history, and today's debates about ideas.
