This discussion looks at the film *Knitting*, starring Yan Bingyan, and tries to understand its poverty, love, marriage, responsibility, abortion, crime, loneliness, and human hurt from a Reformed theological perspective.
This does not mean that the movie itself teaches Reformed theology.
Rather, the movie shows some parts of human life very realistically, and the Bible and Reformed theology can help us understand them more deeply.
1. This Movie Is About More Than Love
On the surface, this movie is about relationships, poverty, betrayal, jealousy, and people depending on one another.
But from a Reformed perspective, it touches an important biblical truth: after people turn away from God, they still desire love, but they no longer know how to love rightly.
Chen Jin, Daping, and Haili all need love and security.
They are not people without feelings.
In fact, they all have very strong feelings.
The problem is that their feelings do not have a right order.
Reformed theology would not simply say, “These are all bad people.”
Reformed theology would say: they are people created in the image of God, but they are also fallen people.
We must see both sides at the same time.
2. Haili: She Is Not Simply a “Bad Woman”
Haili, played by Yan Bingyan, is one of the most important characters to analyze.
When she first appears, she is strong, rough, aggressive, and sometimes hostile.
She also enters the relationship between Chen Jin and Daping, so viewers may first see her as a woman who damages another couple's relationship.
But the movie slowly shows us that Haili is not simply an evil person.
She is also a wounded person.
Her toughness can also be understood as a kind of self-protection.
She seems to believe that if she is not strong enough, the world will swallow her.
This fits a common way of surviving in a fallen world.
“If nobody protects me, I must protect myself.”
But the Bible gives a deeper answer.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
What Haili finally needs is not a stronger man or more money.
What she truly needs is a Savior who will not abandon her.
3. Daping: Her Deepest Desire Is to Be Loved
Daping and Chen Jin live together without marriage, and she becomes pregnant.
According to Scripture, sexual relations between a man and a woman belong within the covenant of marriage.
So from a Reformed ethical view, their problem does not begin only later.
From the beginning, their relationship lacks the public commitment and responsibility of marriage.
Modern culture often understands love this way: “If we love each other now, we can live together.”
But the biblical view of love is closer to this: “I make a covenant with you before God, so I remain responsible for you even when circumstances change.”
These two views of love are very different.
The first is based on feelings.
The second is based on covenant and faithfulness.
4. Chen Jin: Not a Great Villain, but a Man Who Fails His Responsibility
Chen Jin may be one of the most important warning figures in the movie.
This is because he does not look like a traditional villain.
He can be gentle.
He can love people.
He also wants to make money, get married, and build a better life.
But his greatest failure is that he does not truly take the responsibility a man should take.
To make money, he enters illegal and dangerous business.
His reasons seem very practical.
“I need to make money.”
“I need to survive.”
“I need money to get married.”
These goals are not necessarily wrong.
But Reformed ethics strongly teaches that we cannot use sinful means to reach a seemingly good goal.
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” — Mark 8:36
5. Abortion in the Film: Compassion for Suffering Does Not Redefine Sin
One of the heaviest themes in this movie is pregnancy, the loss of a child, and later the choice of abortion.
From a Reformed perspective, this cannot only be explained as “a helpless choice made by a woman in a tragic life.”
We must certainly see her suffering.
But having compassion for suffering does not mean redefining sin as right.
The Bible teaches that life in the womb is still God's creation.
“For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb.” — Psalm 139:13
There is even an interesting contrast here.
The English title of the movie is *Knitting*.
Psalm 139 also uses the picture of God “knitting” human life together in the womb.
The movie shows several people trying to “knit” their broken lives back together.
But Scripture tells us that before people try to knit their lives back together, God is already knitting life together in the womb.
6. The Two Women Do Not Remain Enemies
One of the most interesting changes later in the movie is not romantic love between a man and a woman.
Instead, two women who were once enemies begin to understand and depend on one another.
From a Christian perspective, this is not without value.
Although human beings are fallen, the image of God has not completely disappeared from them.
Reformed theology connects this with common grace.
People who are not regenerate can still show compassion, sacrifice, friendship, and mercy.
So Christians do not need to think that everything in a non-Christian movie must be wrong.
Instead, we can recognize the places where it truthfully shows human nature.
7. The Movie Sees Brokenness but Does Not Fully Explain Its Root
The movie sees human brokenness.
The movie also sees human loneliness.
The movie sees poverty, crime, sex, jealousy, pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion, and abandonment.
It even finds a partly correct answer: people need to understand and care for one another.
But Christianity asks another question: why do these people keep hurting one another?
Is it only because they are poor?
不是。
No.
Is it only because society is unjust?
No.
The Bible takes the problem all the way into the human heart.
“For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts…” — Mark 7:21
Reformed theology calls this problem total depravity.
It does not mean every person is as evil as he could possibly be.
It means sin has affected every part of human life.
Human reason is affected by sin.
Human desire is affected by sin.
Human love is also affected by sin.
Even when we want to love someone, selfishness, control, fear, and desire become mixed into our love.
*Knitting* shows this very accurately, even though it does not give the problem a theological name.
8. It Is a World Without Covenant and Stable Family
There is very little stable family structure in this movie.
Male-female relationships are unstable.
Children are also unstable.
Men can leave.
Women must find another way to survive.
Sexual relationships exist, but covenant is missing.
Pregnancy exists, but stable family is missing.
Love exists, but responsibility is missing.
From the Reformed doctrine of creation, this is not an accidental problem.
God established marriage to give men, women, and children a relationship with clear responsibilities.
Marriage is therefore more than “I love you.”
Marriage also says: “I cannot simply leave whenever I want.”
9. The Title “Cowherd and Weaver Girl” Is Ironic
In the traditional legend, the Cowherd and Weaver Girl are two lovers separated by an outside power.
So the tragedy in the traditional story mainly comes from outside.
But this modern *Cowherd and Weaver Girl* is more painful.
They do not need the Queen Mother of Heaven to separate them.
There is already enough sin, fear, selfishness, and disorder inside their own lives.
The traditional legend seems to say: “If outside forces did not stop them, they could be happy.”
But the Bible has a deeper understanding of human nature.
The Bible would say: “Even if there were no Milky Way separating us, we could still destroy our own relationships.”
Because the deepest separation is not between one human being and another.
It is between the holy God and sinful humanity.
10. Poverty Looks Like the Root of Suffering, but Can Money Solve Everything?
On the surface, much of the suffering in the movie is connected with poverty.
Because they are poor, they live in bad conditions.
Because they are poor, they lack security.
Because they are poor, they are more easily pushed into dangerous, illegal, and insecure work.
Because they are poor, pregnancy, marriage, and raising children all become heavy burdens.
So we should not minimize poverty.
The Bible never says that material conditions do not matter.
Poverty can magnify human weakness and increase many temptations.
But the question is: if they suddenly became rich, would everything really be solved?
The answer is clearly no.
11. Money Can Solve Some Suffering but Not the Root Problem
Money can solve housing problems.
Money can solve some medical problems.
Money can reduce the pressure of survival.
Money can also reduce some pressure to do dangerous or illegal things.
These are real benefits.
So Christians should not become overly “spiritual” and say that money does not matter at all.
But money cannot solve betrayal.
Money cannot solve jealousy.
Money cannot solve selfishness.
Money cannot solve disordered sexual desire.
Money cannot solve a man's refusal to take responsibility.
Money also cannot solve the deep human desire for security and love.
In other words, poverty is an external problem, but sin is a deeper internal problem.
12. Reformed Theology Does Not Blame Everything on Social Conditions
Modern society often says: “If we improve economic conditions, human problems will become smaller.”
This is partly true.
But if we make it the whole answer, it becomes false.
Rich people also get divorced.
Rich people also commit adultery.
Rich people also have abortions.
Rich people also use drugs, abuse alcohol, gamble, and commit crimes.
Rich people can also be anxious, empty, and lonely.
Money can even give a person's sin more power.
A poor person's greed may remain only a fantasy.
But a rich person's greed may actually harm many people.
So Reformed theology would say that circumstances affect how sin appears, but circumstances are not the final source of sin.
The root is still in the human heart.
13. What If They Suddenly Became Rich?
If Chen Jin suddenly had a lot of money, he might not need to do illegal business.
That would certainly reduce some of the tragedy.
But would he automatically become a faithful and responsible man?
Not necessarily.
If Daping suddenly had money, she might not become so desperate because of financial pressure.
But would her need to be loved, accepted, and protected disappear?
不会。
No.
If Haili had money, she might not need to protect herself in such a hard way.
But would her wounds, distrust, and jealousy automatically be healed?
No.
So money might change their living conditions, but it would not necessarily change who they are.
This is what Reformed theology emphasizes: what people truly need is not only a new environment, but a new heart.
14. Poverty Is Not Salvation, and Wealth Is Not Salvation
We should not romanticize poverty just because wealth cannot solve the root problem.
Poverty itself is not a virtue.
Poverty does not automatically make a person holier.
Likewise, wealth itself is not sin.
Abraham was wealthy.
Job was also wealthy.
The main question is not “How much money do you have?”
The question is “What place does money have in your life?”
Is money a tool, or is it your master?
“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” — 1 Timothy 6:10
Notice that Scripture does not say, “Money is the root of all evil.”
It says “the love of money.”
This difference is very important.
15. The Real Tragedy Is “Poverty + Sin”
Poverty creates pressure, and sin turns pressure into harm.
Poverty makes people more vulnerable.
Sin makes vulnerable people hurt one another.
If there were poverty without sin, people could still remain faithful and support one another in hardship.
If there were wealth but still sin, people could still destroy their families and themselves in prosperity.
So the deepest question is not: “How can they become richer?”
It is: “How can they become different people?”
Modern thought often first tries to change systems, circumstances, and economic conditions.
Christianity also cares about these things.
But Christianity goes further and says: even if the world becomes better, people still need to be born again.
Because the deepest problem is not only in the human pocket; it is also in the human heart.
16. Another Thought Experiment: They Are Still Poor, but They Live in a Faithful Christian Community and Are Faithful Christians Themselves
This thought experiment is useful because it helps us separate suffering caused by poverty itself from suffering caused by sin, disorder, and lack of faith.
Suppose they are still poor and still live in a crowded, simple place with few opportunities.
But suppose the society generally respects Christian faith, marriage, family, honest work, and responsibility toward neighbors.
And suppose they themselves are sincere and faithful Christians.
Their lives would not suddenly become rich.
They might still lack money.
They might still live in a small home.
They might still do hard work.
They would still get sick, become tired, and face unfair situations.
But many of the most destructive tragedies might not happen.
17. Chen Jin Might Not Turn to Crime
If Chen Jin were a faithful Christian, he would still face poverty.
But he would know that poverty is not a reason for crime.
He would not make fake products, cheat people, or enter illegal business just because he needs money.
He might have to do lower-paid and harder work.
But he would try to remain honest in his work.
“Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good.” — Ephesians 4:28
So his life might actually be harder in some ways.
But his conscience would have more peace.
And he would not pull his family into greater danger through crime.
18. Their Relationship Would Move Toward Marriage, Not Cohabitation First
If they were faithful Christians, they would not treat love as the same thing as permission to live together.
They would try to establish a marriage covenant first.
Even if the wedding were very simple, that would be fine.
There might be no big banquet.
There might be no house.
There might be little savings.
But the most important thing in marriage is not ceremony or display.
It is making a covenant before God and people.
Then Daping would not simply be a girlfriend who could be abandoned at any time.
She would be a wife.
Chen Jin could not simply leave whenever he wanted.
He would have a public responsibility.
19. A Pregnancy Would Not First Be Seen as a Burden
They might still feel very worried about a pregnancy.
Because raising a child costs money.
But in a believing family, a child would first be understood as a life given by God.
The first question would not be: “Do we have enough money to raise this child?”
Instead, they would first ask: “Since God has entrusted this life to us, how can we faithfully take responsibility?”
This does not mean they would not be afraid.
It does not mean life would be easy.
But “ending the child's life to solve the problem” would not be treated as a normal solution.
The church and family might also help.
That would make a major difference.
20. Haili Might Not Become a Rival but a Person Who Is Received
If Haili were also a Christian, she would not treat another woman's man as an emotional solution for herself.
She might still be lonely.
She might still carry many wounds.
But she would be taught to respect the boundaries of marriage.
At the same time, if there were a healthy church community, she would not have to depend completely on a man for security.
She could have sisters in the faith.
She could have a church family.
There could be people helping her find work, care for children, and face difficulties.
This means her loneliness would not automatically disappear.
But she would not need to fill that loneliness by damaging another family.
21. Poverty Would Remain, but Social Support Would Be Stronger
A genuinely faithful society is not only a society where individuals are more devout.
It often produces stronger structures of mutual help.
For example, church relief.
Mutual help among believers.
Care for widows, orphans, and the poor.
Intervention in marriage and family crises.
Practical help for unemployed people.
So they might still be poor, but they would not necessarily be so isolated.
Many extreme tragedies happen precisely when there is “poverty + isolation + no support.”
22. Their Conflicts Would Not Disappear, but the Way They Handle Conflict Would Change
Even if they were Christians, they would not become sinless people.
They would still argue.
They might still feel jealous.
They might still act selfishly.
They would still become tired.
The difference is that they would share a common moral standard.
They would know what repentance means.
They would know what confession means.
They would know what forgiveness means.
And they would know they cannot always blame other people.
So conflict would not disappear.
But it would be less likely to grow into destruction.
23. The Biggest Change Would Not Be an Easier Life, but More Order in Suffering
Christian faith would not guarantee wealth.
It would not guarantee good health.
It would not guarantee a good job.
It would not guarantee that their children would never face danger.
But their lives would have a new order.
God would come first.
Marriage would have boundaries.
Sex would have boundaries.
Money would have boundaries.
Work would have boundaries.
Responsibility toward neighbors would have boundaries.
Sin would have a name.
Repentance would have a path.
That would greatly change life.
24. They Might Still Be Poor, but They Would No Longer Be People Without Hope
In the original story, many choices are shaped by despair.
“There is no other way.”
“This is the only choice.”
“Just survive first.”
But a Christian, even in poverty, does not believe that present circumstances are the whole of reality.
He knows he belongs to God.
He knows death is not the end.
He knows suffering is not meaningless.
He knows honesty may not be rewarded immediately, but it is still worth keeping.
This changes a person's whole inner life.
25. The Gospel Goes One Step Further Than the Movie
At the end, the movie lets wounded people begin to understand and depend on one another.
It is a compassionate answer.
But Christianity does not stop with “wounded people comforting one another.”
Because two broken people depending on each other are still two broken people.
People need more than understanding.
People also need forgiveness.
People need more than companionship.
People also need new birth.
People need more than a friend who will not leave.
People finally need Christ.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
26. Final Conclusion: Poverty Is a Real Problem, but Not the Deepest Problem
In *Knitting*, poverty is an important cause of suffering, but it is not the final cause.
Money can reduce the burdens of life, but it cannot heal sin, betrayal, desire, jealousy, loneliness, or irresponsibility.
Reformed theology would say that people need both a more just and compassionate society and a heart renewed by Christ.
If these people were still poor but lived in a society that respected Christian order and were themselves faithful Christians, they might not become richer.
But there would likely be much less crime, betrayal, sexual disorder, abortion, irresponsibility, and mutual harm.
They would still suffer.
But suffering would no longer be completely uncontrolled.
Because marriage, family, church, responsibility, repentance, forgiveness, and hope would begin to “knit” life together again.
Poverty creates pressure, and sin turns pressure into harm. The gospel does not promise freedom from all poverty, but it enables people to remain faithful in poverty, to have order in suffering, repentance after failure, and hope even before death.
