How a House Church of About Twenty People Gradually Became a Closed Control System
This small church of around twenty people did not become this way because “everyone suddenly went crazy.”
It appears to have gone through a gradual escalation.
And when each step is viewed separately, it may not look as frightening as the final result.
The real danger is that these steps continued one after another without outside intervention stopping them.
1. The Starting Point Was Not Yet a “Cult,” but Religious Need in the Midst of Life Frustration
The survivor herself recalls that one important reason these believers were vulnerable to the group was that their ordinary lives were “not going well.”
She says that these people felt unsuccessful in ordinary society and unable to compete with others, but once inside the closed church, they could believe that they were morally superior to everyone outside.
So what a cult initially offers is not necessarily money.
It may first offer meaning, identity, a sense of superiority, hope, and certainty about the future.
Because the less control a person feels in ordinary life, the more attractive a system that explains everything may become.
2. Why Did This Church Initially Feel “Good”?
They ate together.
They gave children candy and dumplings.
They cleaned and cooked together.
When someone was sick, everyone would go and pray together.
They taught people not to deceive others, not to be angry, and to pursue goodness.
All of this could give people facing difficult lives a strong sense of community.
So there is an important lesson here.
Cultic control does not necessarily begin with obvious evil.
It may begin with care, mutual support, meaning, shared prayer, and a sense of belonging.
The real problem is that these good things were later captured by a coercive power structure.
3. From “We Believe the Truth” to “Only We Have the Truth”
A house church or small gathering is not itself a danger sign.
The real danger begins when the group gradually develops the belief:
“Outsiders do not understand the truth.”
Then it can become:
“Outsiders are devils.”
Once a group defines all outside correction in advance as “demonic attack,” normal mechanisms of correction begin to fail.
4. The Decisive Change: God Becomes Tied to One Particular Person
Multiple interviews describe Wang Haijun as being deified.
He was described as “the flesh of Jehovah” and “the flesh of Jesus,” and claimed to be more exalted than emperors and kings.
This is the truly dangerous theological turning point in the system.
Because from this point onward:
Opposing Wang Haijun is no longer merely opposing a man.
It can be interpreted as opposing God.
In normal Christianity, a pastor must be tested by Scripture.
In this kind of system, a human being begins to become the source of “God's will.”
This is a major step from religious authority toward personality cult.
5. The Dual Sacralization of Ren Quanqin and Wang Haijun
In 2012, Ren Quanqin was believed to carry “the spirit of Christ, that is, Jesus,” while Wang Haijun was believed to carry “the spirit of Jehovah.”
This is more specific than our earlier summary that “the mother interpreted divine will and the son was God's flesh.”
In other words, there was actually a dual sacralization in this system.
Ren Quanqin was not merely an ordinary “interpreter of divine commands.”
She herself was believed to be the bearer of a divine spirit.
That would greatly strengthen her authority.
6. Ren Quanqin Becomes an Interpreter of “God's Will”
She would suddenly change her voice.
Her voice would become louder.
She would stamp her foot.
Then members interpreted this state as “God manifesting.”
Then she would declare: “Forgiven.”
Thus, a member who had just been declared possessed or sinful could become “holy” again through one word from her.
This means she effectively controlled a crucial religious power: defining sin, declaring demonic possession, and deciding whether someone was forgiven.
Because members' sense of spiritual safety was directly in her hands.
7. Heaven and Hell Change From Doctrines Into Instruments of Control
Normal Christianity certainly teaches about heaven, judgment, and hell.
But here their function changed.
They no longer primarily answer: “How can a person be reconciled to God?”
They become: “If you do not obey us, you will go to hell.”
The survivor says that both she and her parents were deeply afraid of going to hell.
If you refused the leader's demand, it did not merely mean “disobedience”; it could supposedly cause your entire family to go to hell.
In this way, personal choice is almost destroyed.
8. The Outside World Begins to Be Systematically Cut Off
People outside the group were called “devils.”
The survivor was required to break off contact with a childhood friend.
If she interacted with the outside world, it could be interpreted as being “possessed by demons” or “sinning.”
Because if a person still has friends, teachers, other churches, relatives, and internet information, he still has a chance to hear: “This is not normal.”
Therefore, closed groups must weaken those outside voices.
9. Control Expands From Religious Matters Into Daily Life
Control may begin only in religious matters.
Later it can expand into friendships, television, education, marriage, family relationships, the body, and eventually sexuality.
This is a very important escalation path.
Healthy religious authority should have boundaries.
A controlling religion tends to have the opposite feature: power continually seeks new areas of private life to enter.
10. The Group Begins to Create Its Own Punishment System
“Repentance” was not simply prayer.
Depending on the supposed seriousness of the sin, members could be forced to lie prone for one, two, four, eight, or even twenty-four hours.
Cuihua’s father was reportedly punished for twelve hours.
“Brother Xiaoyuan” was reportedly punished for a full day and night.
This proves a very important development:
The group no longer merely had its own “theology”; it had developed its own “judicial system.”
The group defined who was guilty.
The group decided the punishment.
The group also decided when someone was forgiven.
This is a classic parallel authority system.
11. Fear and Relief Are Provided by the Same Controller
Ren Quanqin declares someone guilty.
The member experiences fear and shame.
The member accepts bodily punishment.
The member prays and repents.
Ren Quanqin announces “forgiveness.”
The member feels relief.
The member becomes even more convinced that Ren Quanqin possesses sacred authority.
This is why both fear and relief can be provided by the same controller.
And that can create very strong dependency.
12. The Parents Were Living Inside a “Repaying a Divine Favor” Logic
Cuihua's parents had been unable to have children for years.
They prayed to God.
Then Cuihua was born.
So the parents viewed her as a child given by God.
They even felt she brought blessing to the family.
This allowed “giving the child back to God” to be framed as repaying a divine favor.
It was not simply that someone suddenly said: “Hand over your daughter.”
It rested on a long-standing story:
“This child was given to you by God, so if God now asks for her back, what right do you have to refuse?”
This is a powerful form of religious coercion.
13. They First Created a Crisis in Which the Whole Family Would Go to Hell
Cuihua missed one session because she stayed home watching television.
The next day, her mother told her: “God no longer wants us; our whole family will go to hell.”
So the child was no longer facing: “Do I want to do this?”
Instead: “Should I sacrifice myself to save my entire family?”
Adults created the crisis.
But the child was made responsible for solving it.
14. So-Called “Consent” Was One of the Most Important Disguises in the System
Wang Haijun repeatedly required her to say: “I am doing this voluntarily.”
He even tried to make the child initiate actions herself while presenting himself as not forcing her.
Later, Cuihua searched online and learned: with a child under fourteen, supposed “consent” does not make such conduct lawful.
It suggests he may not have been living entirely inside a religious delusion.
At least at some moments, he knew that the outside legal world existed.
15. Repetition Makes the Abnormal Feel Normal
Cuihua had to go every day.
She describes it very precisely: “Like eating three meals a day.”
This sentence is very important.
Because repetition changes a person's sense of normality.
The first time, it is abnormal.
After a hundred repetitions, it may become “part of daily life.”
This is not because the harm becomes smaller.
It is because the brain adapts in order to survive.
16. The Group Systematically Destroyed the Child's Alternative Attachments
They did not allow her to love friends more than “God.”
They did not allow attachment to television.
They did not allow attachment to a stuffed toy.
Even studying could not be loved more than God.
This effectively did one thing: it redirected all emotional resources toward the control system.
Friends were cut off.
Hobbies were removed.
Eventually, only family, church, and God remain.
And all three were tied together by the controllers.
The child was left with almost no psychological escape route.
17. Coincidences Are Reinterpreted as “God's Punishment”
The real cause was probably simple: food allergy.
But it happened after she visited her friend.
The leader immediately interpreted it as: “God is punishing you.”
Later, the rash subsided.
The child could then conclude: “It really was God's punishment.”
This is a classic chain:
Coincidence.
Religious interpretation.
Fear.
Behavior change.
Stronger control.
18. The Mother's Hunger Strike: The Controlled Person Becomes a Controller
After Cuihua resisted, her mother stopped eating.
The child came home each day afraid she might find her mother dead.
In the end, she did not return because she had become convinced again.
She returned because she was afraid her mother would die.
This shows that control was not carried out only by the cult leaders.
Controlled parents can themselves become controllers of the next layer.
This is how a control system penetrates deeply into family life.
19. “Voluntary Choice” Loses Its Meaning Under Psychological Coercion
No one held a knife to Cuihua.
But her mother stopped eating.
The child feared every day that her mother might die.
On the surface, this looks like the child “made her own decision.”
In reality, her range of choice had been destroyed by psychological pressure.
This is why, when studying cults, we cannot merely ask: “Did anyone hold a gun to you?”
We should ask: “What would you lose if you refused?”
If the answer is my mother may die, my whole family will go to hell, or my parents will reject me, then the word “voluntary” has almost lost its normal meaning.
20. Members Begin Rationalizing Contradictions for the System
The members were not completely without doubt.
They would wonder: “Is this god actually real?”
But then they themselves found an explanation:
God is real, but when God lives in a human being, that human may still have selfish desires.
This explanation is crucial.
Because evidence that should overthrow the system is reinterpreted so that the system survives.
This kind of structure is a self-sealing belief system.
21. Control Eventually Enters the Mind
At first, control comes from outside.
Someone scolds you.
Someone hits you.
Someone prevents you from leaving.
But the strongest form of control is different.
The strongest form is: even when the controller is absent, you are afraid to leave.
Because there is already a voice inside your mind:
“If you leave, you will go to hell.”
“Doubt is sin.”
“Outsiders are devils.”
At this point, control has been internalized.
The leader no longer needs to watch you constantly.
You begin to watch yourself.
22. Why Are About Twenty People Enough to Create Such a System?
Many people assume that a cult must have thousands of followers.
It does not.
Around twenty people are enough to form a complete miniature society.
It can have supreme authority, an interpreter of divine commands, a ruling family, ordinary members, a punishment system, marriage rules, sexual rules, rules for children's education, and a division between insiders and enemies.
If members' main social relationships all exist within the group, then for them the group has effectively become “the whole world.”
At that stage, whether the group has twenty people or two hundred, the basic nature is already the same.
The difference is scale, not mechanism.
23. The Real Dividing Line Is Not the House Church, but Uncorrectable Power
House meetings and small churches are not themselves the problem.
House church ≠ cult.
The real question is not: “Do they meet in a home?”
It is: does someone claim to be God?
Are there unquestionable divine commands?
Is information controlled?
Can people leave freely?
Are children protected?
Are leaders accountable?
Is Scripture truly above the leader?
These are the real questions.
The truly dangerous dividing line is: a person begins to possess sacred authority that cannot be corrected.
24. School Became the Most Important Outside World
Inside the church, she was “God’s toy,” “a child with demons,” or “a sinner.”
But at school, she could be a top-performing student, someone with friends, and someone who could have a future.
That is a completely different identity.
So school did not merely provide education.
It provided an alternative identity system.
The church told her: “You belong to God and Wang Haijun.”
School could tell her: “You are a student. You have ability. You can have a future.”
This helps explain why the controllers increasingly tried to stop her from studying.
Education was genuinely dangerous to the system.
25. Awakening Did Not Happen All at Once
In sixth grade, she first received an external standard of judgment from her morality-and-law textbook.
But she immediately encountered a conflict:
“What if my parents agree?”
“What if God requires it?”
This shows that merely telling someone “the law says this is wrong” is not enough to immediately destroy an internalized belief system.
She was living in two worlds at the same time.
One world told her: this is abuse.
The other world told her: this is sacrifice, service, and God's will.
Real awakening occurred only after these two interpretive systems collided for a long time and one gradually began to collapse.
26. The Real Trigger for Reporting the Group: They Tried to Block Her Final Path Through Education
She did not report the group because she had suddenly stopped believing in it completely.
The immediate event that pushed her to call the police was that they tried to block even her final path through education.
She says: “This was my only chance to change my situation and social position.”
When they went to the school and threatened the teacher who wanted to help her, she finally called the police.
This gives us a very important clue about how people may leave cults.
Leaving a cult does not necessarily begin with a theological debate.
Sometimes it begins with a very practical realization:
“This group is destroying my future.”
27. The Arrival of Police Created a Crack in the “God's” Authority
Wang Haijun reportedly became very frightened after being taken by police.
Seeing this gave Cuihua a simple but powerful reality shock.
The supposed “god” was afraid of police.
The supposed “god” became sleepy.
Such ordinary realities can sometimes puncture deification more effectively than dozens of pages of theological argument.
28. Even Convictions Did Not Wake Everyone Up
Wang Haijun went to prison.
Ren Quanqin went to prison.
Cuihua’s mother herself was convicted.
Yet she still did not truly leave the belief system.
She even wanted her daughter to marry Wang Haijun after his release.
This shows:
Facts can destroy a person’s theory without immediately destroying that person’s identity.
For Cuihua’s mother, this belief had consumed twenty or thirty years of her life.
Admitting it was false would mean admitting that her youth was wasted, her faith was wrong, and her judgment was wrong.
Most seriously, she personally helped harm her daughter.
So “waking up” for her is not simply accepting a new fact.
It is almost equivalent to destroying her entire life narrative.
29. Helping Cult Members Awaken Is Not Simply About “Winning an Argument”
Simply telling someone “what you believe is false” is usually not enough.
Evidence is essential.
But simply proving someone wrong may sometimes make them more defensive.
A more effective approach may also need to communicate:
“Being deceived does not mean your whole life has no value.”
“Participating in wrongdoing does not mean you can never repent.”
“Admitting error does not mean your entire past life becomes meaningless.”
So effective help is probably not about “winning an argument.”
It is about helping a person regain safety, independent thinking, outside relationships, the ability to choose, and enough emotional space to admit past mistakes without psychologically collapsing.
30. From a Christian Perspective, Admitting Error Is Not the End of a Person's Life
From a Christian perspective, this is especially important.
Because the true gospel is not:
“You must prove that you never committed serious wrong.”
而是:
It is:
“A person can honestly confess real sin and still have a path of repentance and grace.”
This may be one of the most important resources Christianity can offer when helping long-term cult members awaken.
31. From a Reformed Perspective, Sola Scriptura Is an Important Safeguard
Sola Scriptura is not merely a slogan.
It is also a mechanism for preventing spiritual authority from becoming absolute.
A pastor is not God.
An elder is not God.
Parents are not God.
No claim that “God told me” automatically receives equal authority with Scripture.
A healthy church should allow examination, questions, correction, appeal, and leaving.
It should even deliberately build structures that prevent one pastor from deciding everything alone.
This is one important reason for eldership, peer accountability, financial transparency, and child-protection systems.
结论
Conclusion
This small church of around twenty people did not become this way because “everyone suddenly went crazy.”
It appears to have gone through a gradual escalation:
Life hardship → community support and emotional warmth → perceived answered prayer and confirmation bias → narratives of special spirits and miracles → dual sacralization of Ren Quanqin and Wang Haijun → concentration of authority to interpret God's will → sin–repentance–forgiveness system → fear of heaven and hell → cutting off outside relationships → reconstruction of personal identity → family responsibility hijacked by religion → manufactured “consent” → repetition normalizes the abnormal → body, marriage, and sexuality come under full control → victims and parents begin maintaining the system themselves.
In the end, it was no longer merely “a church with seriously mistaken doctrine.”
It had effectively formed a closed miniature society.
It had its own sacred leaders, rules, punishments, standards of truth, and even its own marriage and sexual ethics.
Civil law, family morality, and even basic child safety were subordinated to this small system.
This is the most dangerous condition when religious control becomes fully developed.
