Exodus 9 — Bible Study Guide
Exodus 9 mainly records the fifth, sixth, and seventh plagues: death of livestock, boils, and hail.
One major theme is this: God not only saves Israel, but through judgment He also makes Egypt and the nations know who He is.
② Background and Story — 5 Minutes
Pharaoh has already seen God's power many times.
But when a plague is removed, he hardens his heart again.
In chapter 9, the judgments clearly become more serious.
Earlier plagues mainly affected daily life and the environment, but now they directly strike animals and human bodies.
Then the seventh plague, hail, goes further and seriously damages fields, crops, trees, and lives.
Yet even in judgment, God still gives warnings and a way to escape the coming judgment.
③ Key Verses and Theology — 15 Minutes
Today we will focus on only three key points.
Point 1: God Makes a Distinction for His People
Exodus 9:4
But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt, so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.
The next day, it happened just as God had said.
The next day the LORD did what he had said. The livestock of Egypt died, but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died. Pharaoh sent people to see what had happened. They found that not one of Israel’s animals had died. But Pharaoh was still stubborn, and he would not let the people go.
解经
Explanation
The point is not that the Israelites were simply “more lucky.”
This is God's deliberate distinction.
They were in the same land and the same time, yet the results were completely different.
God is telling Pharaoh: This is not simply a natural disaster. It is My judgment.
Pharaoh even sent people to investigate.
The investigation confirmed that God's word had been fulfilled.
But even when a person sees evidence, he may still refuse to repent.
Pharaoh's problem was not a lack of evidence. His problem was that he refused to submit to God.
An Important Question
If Egypt's livestock died here, why are there animals again during the hail plague?
The wording of 9:6 can be understood as an extremely severe destruction of Egyptian livestock, without requiring that every single animal in all Egypt died.
Therefore, the presence of livestock during the hail plague is not a contradiction.
Point 2: God Is Sovereign over Pharaoh and Displays His Glory
This is probably the most important theological passage in the chapter.
Notice verse 16.
“I have allowed you to remain so that I may show you my power and so that my name may be proclaimed throughout the earth.”
Paul later uses this verse when explaining God's sovereignty.
Romans 9:17–18
Reformed View
This passage clearly shows God's sovereignty.
Pharaoh is not an enemy whom God cannot control.
Even Pharaoh's resistance is ultimately under God's sovereignty.
But this does not mean Pharaoh has no responsibility.
Pharaoh hardened his own heart.
同时:
At the same time:
God hardened Pharaoh's heart.
Both truths are taught in Scripture.
God is absolutely sovereign.
Man is also responsible for his own sin.
Point 3: True Repentance Is More Than Fear of Judgment
God gives a warning before the hail falls.
Even while judging Egypt, God first gives a warning.
Some Egyptians begin to fear the word of the LORD.
If we believe God's word, we will act according to God's word.
Pharaoh Also Says, “I Have Sinned”
This sounds very much like repentance.
But Moses knew where the problem was.
But I know that you and your officials still do not truly fear the LORD God.
Therefore:
Being afraid of the consequences of sin is not the same as hating sin itself.
What Pharaoh really wanted was “Make the hail stop,” not “I want to turn to God, fear God, and obey God.”
Gospel Connection
Exodus 9 repeatedly shows us a pattern:
God warns → man refuses to believe → judgment comes.
But those who believe God's warning act on it and escape the hail.
In Exodus 12, this pattern becomes even clearer.
God announces the judgment of death, while also providing the lamb and its blood as the way of escape.
Ultimately, all of this points to Christ.
Judgment is real, but God Himself also provides salvation.
④ One Family Application Question — 5 Minutes
Pharaoh said, “I have sinned,” but when the trouble ended, he hardened his heart again. How can we know whether our repentance is real, or whether we are only sorry because sin has brought painful consequences?
For example, after losing our temper, are we sorry only because it caused trouble, or do we repent because we know we sinned against God?
⑤ Family Prayer — 5–10 Minutes
First, thank God that He is sovereign over all things.
Second, ask God not to let us be like Pharaoh, hearing God's word again and again while hardening our hearts.
Third, ask the Holy Spirit to give us true repentance—not merely fear of sin's consequences, but a true hatred of sin and a turning to Christ.
祷告
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You because You are Lord over all the earth.
No person, nation, or power is outside Your sovereign rule.
Please forgive us, because we are often like Pharaoh. We call on You in trouble, but when the trouble is gone, we forget You again.
Please give us true repentance through the Holy Spirit, so that we may fear Your Word and obey Your Word.
We also thank You for providing true salvation for us in Jesus Christ.
In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
