Exodus 4:25–26 — Explanation
These two verses are among the most difficult passages in Exodus.
But if we read it in the context of the covenant of circumcision, Moses’ responsibility for his family, and God’s holiness, it becomes much clearer.
1. Verse-by-Verse
Then Zipporah took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet with the foreskin and said, “You are a bridegroom of blood to me.”
— Exodus 4:25
Then Zipporah took a flint knife.
Zipporah was Moses’ wife, and she was a Midianite.
The “flint” was a very sharp stone that could be used as a knife.
She suddenly took the flint because the situation had become extremely serious.
At a lodging place on the way, the LORD met Moses and was about to kill him.
— Exodus 4:24
So this was not an ordinary family event.
God was judging Moses.
And circumcised her son.
This is the heart of the problem: Moses’ son had not been circumcised.
Why was this so serious?
Every male among you shall be circumcised. This is my covenant with you and your descendants, which you must keep.
— Genesis 17:10
Any uncircumcised male shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.
— Genesis 17:14
So the problem was not simply that a small religious ceremony had been forgotten.
Circumcision was the sign of God’s covenant.
2. Why Would God Even Seek to Kill Moses?
This is the most important point in this passage.
This is what the LORD says: “Israel is my son, my firstborn.”
— Exodus 4:22
If you refuse to let my son go, I will kill your firstborn son.
— Exodus 4:23
The LORD met Moses and was about to kill him.
— Exodus 4:24
This order is very important.
Before God judges Pharaoh, He first deals with His own servant Moses.
Moses was going to tell Pharaoh:
“You must obey the LORD.”
But Moses’ own family had not obeyed God's clear covenant command.
This created a very serious contradiction.
How could Moses represent God and demand Pharaoh’s obedience while he himself neglected God's covenant?
3. How Did Zipporah Know That Circumcision Was Necessary?
The text does not explicitly tell us.
So we must be careful not to treat speculation as biblical fact.
But because she immediately circumcised her son, she clearly understood that the problem involved circumcision.
It is very possible that Moses already knew that his son should be circumcised but had failed to do it for some reason.
The Bible does not tell us the exact reason.
Therefore, we cannot say with certainty:
“Zipporah definitely opposed circumcision before this.”
That interpretation is possible, but the text itself does not explicitly say so.
4. What Does “Touched Moses’ Feet” Mean?
There are some interpretive difficulties in the original text.
“She caused it to touch his feet.”
There is debate about whether “his” refers to Moses or to the son.
Also, the Bible sometimes uses “feet” as a euphemism for the lower body or genital area.
Therefore, several interpretations exist.
A traditional and straightforward interpretation is that Zipporah circumcised her son and then touched Moses’ feet with the foreskin, showing that the circumcision had been performed.
The main point is not the exact physical action involving the “feet.”
After the bloody circumcision took place, God's judgment stopped.
5. What Does “Bridegroom of Blood” Mean?
This is the hardest phrase in the whole passage.
“You are a bridegroom of blood to me.”
Zipporah was probably expressing her strong reaction to this bloody event.
“Because of this circumcision and bloodshed, you have become a ‘bridegroom of blood’ to me.”
We cannot be completely certain whether her tone expressed anger, disgust, fear, or some kind of formal ritual expression.
So we should not overinterpret Zipporah’s emotions.
6. Exodus 4:26 Is the Key to the Event
So the LORD let him alone. At that time she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.
— Exodus 4:26
So the LORD let him alone.
This sentence makes the cause-and-effect relationship clear.
Danger → the son is circumcised → God lets Moses go.
Therefore, we can conclude with considerable confidence:
God’s threat against Moses was connected with Moses’ failure to circumcise his son.
7. Reformed Perspective: Three Important Theological Lessons
① God's grace does not cancel God's holiness.
Moses was God's chosen servant.
But being “chosen” does not mean that obedience is optional.
God had given Moses a great mission.
But a greater calling does not mean God ignores his sin.
Rather, God first disciplines His servant and then uses him.
② The covenant is not abstract theology; it enters the family.
Moses could not simply say:
“I am a descendant of Abraham, and I believe in the LORD.”
God's covenant also concerned his household and children.
This is one reason Reformed theology places strong emphasis on the covenant family.
Of course, New Testament baptism should not simply be equated with every detail of Old Testament circumcision.
But Reformed theology normally sees a continuing covenant principle:
God does not merely call an isolated individual; He also takes covenant responsibilities within the believer's household seriously.
③ “Blood” is very important here in Exodus.
Notice the sequence:
Exodus 4: blood of circumcision → Moses is spared from death.
Later, in Exodus 12:
Blood of the Passover lamb → Israel’s firstborn sons are spared from death.
Finally, in the New Testament:
Blood of Christ → God's people are saved from sin and judgment.
Of course, we should not directly say that Zipporah circumcising her son is itself a type of Jesus’ crucifixion.
That would go beyond the text.
But throughout redemptive history, we repeatedly see an important theme:
When sinners stand before a holy God, death is real judgment; and the blood and covenant signs appointed by God are connected with deliverance from judgment.
Ultimately, we are not saved by the blood of circumcision or by the blood of animals.
It is the blood of Jesus Christ that truly takes away sin.
One-Sentence Summary
Moses was sent by God to lead the covenant people, yet he had neglected God's commanded covenant sign in his own family; God severely confronted him, Zipporah immediately circumcised their son, and God stopped the judgment.
This was a very serious warning to Moses: You must first obey Me before you can represent Me and say to Pharaoh, “This is what the LORD says.”
